PRESTONSBURG, Ky. (WSAZ) -- A old golf course was born anew Friday at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park.
The Jenny Wiley Executive Golf Course was reopened by Prestonsburg city officials after a five-year hiatus. It served as a frisbee golf course since 2004.
"It's just really come together in a short period of time," Prestonsburg Mayor Jerry Fannin said. "It's not really the quality we want right now."
June's floods damaged the putting greens at the course.
Officials hope the Par 3 course appeals to youth learning the sport.
"This will be a place for them to start out," Fannin said. "Because if you start out on a championship golf course, sometimes it's a little intimidating."
The course is credited as the site where many learned to play, like Ralph Davis of Tutor Key, Ky.
"It's still my favorite. It was my first course." Ralph Davis said. "I'll probably take one (of my two sons) each weekend."
Davis' 10-year-old son, Paul, played Jenny Wiley's Executive Course Friday.
"I think some of the kids my age would enjoy this because you're getting a big workout with your arms and get much stronger," 6th grader Paul Davis said. " It's just a lot of fun to see how far you can hit the ball."
The new course will be managed by neighboring Stonecrest Golf Course. Greens fees are $10.
