UPDATE: 1/13/2011 @ 3:45pm
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A post office in Charleston will soon close its doors for good.

The U.S. Postal Service says they are closing their Capitol Station office on March 31st.

The clerk will be reassigned to another post office.

Those who use the Capitol Station Post Office will now pick up their mail at the main post office in Charleston, which is located at the corner of Washington and Lee streets. Customers will have the same PO Box numbers, so nothing will change except for the location.

UPDATE: Wednesday, November 4 @ 1:00pm
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Cathy Yarosky, Communications Program Specialist with the U.S. Postal Service, tells WSAZ.com the list of post offices set for consolidation or closure has changed yet again.

The list was modified again on October 5.

Yarosky tells WSAZ.com the Capitol Station and Spring Hill station are still on the list for consolidation.

Right now, the United States Postal Service is conducting a feasibility study to determine whether or not there is an opportunity for consolidation of one or more of these operations.

We're told the postal service won't take any action before January.

South Charleston Mayor Frank Mullens tells WSAZ.com the city is working to save the Spring Hill location.

He plans to bring up the issue at Thursday night's city council meeting.

Mullens says he has also contacted local lawmakers to help save the location.

ORIGINAL STORY
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Five post offices in the Kanawha Valley are on a list of more than 3,200 around the country for consolidation or closure.

The branches on the list include Sissonville, Cross Lanes, South Charleston, Kanawha City, and the Stonewall Station.

That list was sent to the American Postal Workers Union this week.

The office of Charleston's Post Master referred WSAZ.com to the United State Postal Service's Corporate Communications Department in Philadelphia for comment.

Cathy Yarosky, Communications Program Specialist, tells WSAZ.com the list has changed and might change at least one more time.

The list she received on Thursday does not include the branches in Sissonville, South Charleston and Cross Lanes. The latest list now includes Kanawha City, Stonewall Station, Marmet, Spring Hill, the Capitol Station, and the Charleston annex.

Again, this list is not set in stone. It's currently up for review. It does not, at this time, mean the local offices on that list will ultimately be affected.

Yarosky tells WSAZ.com the USPS will not close or consolidate any branches without some type of public hearing or comment period.

The USPS has seen a steady decline in volume with a projected loss of $6 billion for fiscal year of 2009.

Who else is going to delivery your mail if the postal service goes private, I had Christmas packages from UPS before Christmas and the driver called to see if he could leave it "down the road" because there was a wreck that would "slow him down" - that would mean an extra trip for him - too costly. Postal Service has "never" in my 60 years as an adult had that excuse. Jobs are at stake, people lives, Cross Lanes PO is practically "brand new" where were the studies before they spent all the money to build the new facility a few years ago. USPS needs to realize they are a service receiving tax based breaks as as taxpayers taxpayers should have the right to decide such issues, not some overpaid "administrative" employees thousands of miles away. These changes will have negative impacts on so many elderly and "shut ins"- people making these decisions - need to put themselves in our shoes for ONCE! It comes down to dollars and cents not actual people. God Help Us on other "services".

To annonymous- If the Poastal service was privatized, do you seriously think you could buy a postage stamp for forty-four freakin' cents? Do you think you could pay a private company two quarters to haul your letter three states away? Keep dreaming. You don't know it all, just like the rest of us. All that everyone knows for sure is, there's a huge problem and it's got to be dealt with now.

People want to get on here and dog the Postal Service but unless you work for them then you have not right to comment on them..As for ex postal worker you apparently quit or was fired for some reason or you wouldnt be bashing the postal service just remember they put money in your pocket and food on your table. I would like to see everyone who thinks we have it made try to do the job. You wouldnt last 1 day before you cried like a baby and wanted to quit. So think about it this way just maybe everyone who wants to see us shut down well maybe you should have to lose your job as well. Then you wouldnt feel the same because if it was your job in jeopardy you would be crying and asking for government assistance like Unemployment. Dont bash us until you've been one of us.
