HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin (D) kicked off a statewide effort in Huntington Thursday to target drug dealers.

It's called "Operation Eviction" -- and law enforcement agencies say it is supposed to send a message to out-of-state drug dealers to leave the state immediately.

To get it going, troopers with high powered guns, choppers hovering above and K-9 units on standby raided the city.

It was the kind of police work Roberta Howard of Huntington likes to see in her neighborhood.

"They need to keep up what they're doing. We just don't need that," said Howard.

Operation Eviction rounded up a dozen suspects who had warrants out for their arrest. Seven suspects were detained and some arrested at a house in the 19 hundred block of 9th Avenue. Police say the charges are drug related.

"For the record, I didn't do nothing," said one woman who was arrested there.

"Why are they arresting you?" asked WSAZ reporter Dave Benton.

"Because that's what they do," said the suspect.

Cabell County Magistrate Ron Baumgardner arraigned the suspects after they were arrested and says most crimes in town are connected to drugs.

"Drugs are in relation to almost everything we do," said Baumgardner.

Neighbors say all this drama in the heart of Huntington's hot spot for drug dealing will hopefully send a strong message.

It's so in the open, they do it on the streets. It's just an open market," said Huntington resident Reginald Hill.

The police need to crack down on 9th street west and 10th street west. We know you're selling drugs. You're going to get caught. Don't you know that?? If the city would condemn these coladated houses, maybe they would leave. What happened to the bus ride the mayor took around town. Did you go to the west end? Where is law enforcement? Come get'em. I've told you where they are.
