Ohio Budget Woes Could Mean Social Services Cuts in Lawrence County

IRONTON, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Continued state budget delays in Ohio means deeper cuts where they would hurt most -- no more daycare services, no rides to doctor's appointments, no home medical visits to seniors.
Those are just some of the social services on the chopping block. In addition to that, the workers who provide the remaining services in Lawrence County may soon be doing it for free.
Gene Myers, director of the Lawrence County Department of Job and Family Services, said if the state doesn't decide on something by Tuesday, his agency will not meet payroll. As a result, they've issued a drastic contingency plan -- asking employees to volunteer their time.
Contracted services would be the first to go. That means no more rides to doctor's appointments or medical home visits for medicare patients. It also means daycare subsidies for qualifying clients would be cut.
Services that will not be affected by the cuts are for basic needs, including assistance for food, shelter and any emergencies.
We received word late Friday afternoon that a compromise has been reached at the Ohio Statehouse, and a budget could be approved soon.

Give me a break! You Bushies have been saving up disappointment for eight years and are now trying to unburden yourselves. Admittedly, I don't have an answer to the social problems any more than the haters posting here. All sides have their individual good and bad points. The BEST answer? When candidates for the State Senate and State House are running for office/reelection, ask lots of questions about the issues that concern you and voice your own opinions. Stop playing the "my vote won't change things" game. Ask Al Franken how important EVERYones' vote is.

"I am a single parent and receive no help other than the insurance and I thank God" I beg to differ with you as you DO receive help! I would give my right arm for a medical card. Our deductible is $1000.00 a person and premiums are over $500 a month.

I cant believe that the state would cut the daycare and care for the elderly. How about we cut off the people on the public system that do nothing!! They dont work they lay on their butts taking drugs and drinking. Get them off the welfare and help the women and men who are getting up everyday and going to work but need someone to keep their children so they can provide for their families. It is hard enough being a single mom without this. I have a niece with 3 children whom is not on welfare but does use the daycare to help take care of the children she didnt plan things that way but her husband is sick and cant work so God bless her for tyring give these people a break and dont look down on them for they have not wronged you or anyone else. The people that do this are sitting in their nice homes with retirement or high income and have never been in the shoes of a single mother that struggles. I am a single parent and receive no help other than the insurance and I thank God!!!!
