GILBERT, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Just two months ago, parts of eastern Kentucky and southern West Virginia were hit with devastated flooding.
Schools flooded and roads and small bridges washed away. While remarkable progress has been made, there are still some safety concerns for residents and motorists driving through the area.
Part of U.S. 52, for example, is literally falling apart. The washed-out roads were just part of the flood damage. Local schools, including Gilbert Elementary, were hard hit. But a little elbow grease and help from FEMA is making a difference.
Construction workers are replacing the floors at the elementary school. At the nearby high school, the renovation work is nearly complete. Aug. 19 is the deadline to have Gilbert Elementary ready for students.
