PEDRO, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A Rock Hill High School student is being called a hero after saving the lives of two children.
During a house fire Wednesday morning, 17-year-old Corey Yinger put the safety of his nephews ahead of his own. Yinger was looking after the three boys while his parents were at work, but the house caught fire around 10 a.m.
One of the boys was in the front room and managed to get out through the front door, but Yinger says he was trapped in a bedroom with the other boys, a 3 year-old and a 6-month-old.
“I didn’t really have time to stop and think,” Yinger said. “I just grabbed them and took them out as fast as I could. I opened up my dad’s bedroom door. The halls were full of smoke, so I grabbed the boys and felt my way through the house.”
He says he was able to kick a window out and hand the youngest nephew to his neighbor Mark Bailey, who was then able to reach through the window and pull the other child out.
Neighbors say without Yinger's brave actions, the kids wouldn't have made it.
"Knowing at 17 that it could be the end of your life, and not worrying about it, worrying about your nephews, that is the heroic part,” Mark Bailey said. “Not thinking of himself, thinking of the others."
The house and everything in it is a total loss. Neighbors say they're already in the process of raising money to help get the family back on their feet.
With help from the Red Cross, the family is currently staying at a motel in South Point. They hope to eventually put another home at the same location as their old one.
There's no word yet on what started the fire.
