Firefighters Battle the Elements
The heat of Summer can really take its toll on our local firefighters trying to do their job.

BURLINGTON, OHIO (WSAZ) -- The heat of Summer is already enough, but for firefighters it's just another added element of battling this fire.

"There's nothing that really prepares you for the heat," Firefighter Don Collins said.

Collins is one of dozens of firefighters who arrived on scene at a house fire in Southeastern Ohio Thursday morning.

The heat and smoke pouring from the home just adds to the exhaustion these firefighters must also deal with while trying to do their job.

"It's a challenge," Chesapeake FD Assistant Chief Ed Webb said. "You go in there and you're fighting the fire. It can range from anywhere from 400 degrees above. And then you come outside and its 90."

"Inside the house we had a thermal camera with us and it was roughly about 450 degrees," Collins said. "So, it's roughly what your oven is when you cook a turkey. So that's the temp you expect in the house."

To help deal with the intense heat, the firefighters have a system set up to make sure they stay safe while dealing with the scorching temperatures.

"We have plenty of rehab teams," Collins said. "So, they are outside setting up tents so we can have shaded area and plenty of water and drinks."

And there's one other thing we should point out about these firefighters who are so quick to put on all that heavy gear in the summer heat. Most of them do it for free. They volunteering their time simply to keep us all safe.

Luther why would you slam the people that try to help our neighbors out. That does not make any since at all to me. If you think you can do a better job at it, go to a vol. fire dept and put an application in, then come talk to me.

Must have been the worlds greatest surround and drown crew (http://tiny.cc/NV5nm). Did you watch the video? Looks to me like they did a pretty bang up job. Maybe paying firefighters is a waste of money?

I am pretty sure many of these guys played with fire as children. When the grew up they still want to play dress up so they joined the volunteer (surround and drown) crew. They don't have the guts to go into a real burning building like the real firefighters!
