End of Summer Events Struggling to Stay Afloat

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Summer is winding down but it won’t be going out with a bang this year, at least not in Charleston- because the Regatta has gone under.
For nearly 40 years the popular Labor Day Festival was a capital city favorite and since its demise, other events seem to be sinking along with it.
Mayor Danny Jones says the Charleston Distance Run is staying afloat but the Funeral Parade isn’t set in stone and the ‘Taste of Charleston’ has sunk.
“I’m not surprised that its canceled because of the displacement of all those people they all won't be downtown,” Mayor Jones said.
The 28 year tradition was tentatively set for later this month, but now because of sponsorship problems 'Taste of Charleston' is off the calendar.
“What I’d like to see them consider, is doing an event during Doo Wop in October because there will be close to a thousand cars on the boulevard and it will bring people into Charleston that will go,” the Mayor said.
Another option is to give folks a ‘Taste of Charleston’ during FestivALL.
“They have a great event and it’s one of those things if it works out we’d love to have it,” said FestivALL Director Larry Groce.
The new Charleston tradition has grown to 10 days- and this year more than 50,000 people showed up to FestivALL, that’s up several thousand over last year.
“We’ve shown that people are willing to come out and go to more than one thing,” Groce said.
The Charleston Distance Run is one of the last Regatta events hanging in there. It’s set for September 5th.

We can thank "mayor ?" Danny Jones and good ole Kent Carper for this one.
As a curious band parent does this mean there will me no parade?
I don't think that you will see the Distance Run moved. It's a nice thing to train all summer for.
