LOGAN COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- It's a day that is remembered as a life-changing and devastating one for people who live along Buffalo Creek.
On February 26, 1972 a massive flood caused by a collapse at a coal impoundment killed 125 people, injured 1,100 and left thousands of people homeless.
Just talking about the Buffalo Creek Disaster brings Gertie Moore to tears. She survived that day, but she knew many of the people that didn't make it.
Sunday, she watched as a new road sign was dedicated to help their memories live on.
"It don't take signs to keep memories alive, but people coming into this part of the country that's never been here before will know our history," said Moore.
Delegates and Senators who represent Logan County introduced a special piece of legislation during the 2009 legislative session. It passed, allowing Buffalo Creek Road to be dubbed the Buffalo Creek Memorial Highway.
"I'm just honored to do it for the families," said Delegate Greg Butcher.
"For generations to come these signs will hang here and people with children will know to tell them about the people who lost their lives."
The Buffalo Creek Memorial Highway spans 17 miles.

My mother lost her brother,,sister in law,,2 neices,,2 nephews in this flood..i think the new sign is a great ideal..my mother misses them every day..
So positive and thoughtful. I wished you could hear more about this on the news instead of negative things
Most of my dads family lost everything they had in this flood. I don't think we will ever forget what they went through, let alone the fear of not knowing that my dad & my uncle had while they searched for them. I remember dad sketching out a map of the back roads (all the direct roads were washed away) he and my uncle (who flew in from Florida) would take to find their family. Thankfully all survived the flood. Somewhere in the attic I have the newspapers that dad saved about the flood & pictures of the awful damage that was done. A sign naming the road is great but it will never remove the fears a lot of them still have when they go thru heavy down pours of rain, just the sound of rain is scary for some....
