O.J. Mayo will sit out the next three basketball games for Huntington High as part of a compromise agreement with the West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission (WVSSAC).
Mayo had already been suspended for two games for receiving two technicals during a previous game against Capital High School. But the WVSSAC wanted additional action against Mayo for having contact with referee Mike Lazo during that same game. The contact with Lazo caused the official to fall down. Huntington High originally agreed to suspend Mayo for 14 days because of that incident. But as part of today’s compromise, that was changed to 13 days. That will allow Mayo to play against Capital for the conference championship on February 19 in Charleston.
Both punishments against Mayo will happen at the same time, so Mayo will sit out in the games against Parkersburg, George Washington and Scott County, Kentucky.
Mayo will not dress during those games, but he will attend practices and he will sit on the bench during the three games to support his teammates.
