CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The WAS campaign is a reminder of Willy Albert Shuman, and also a reminder to "Wear A Seat Belt."
Shuman was killed in a car accident last June. He had just graduated from George Washington High School in Charleston and was getting ready to go to the Air Force Academy. Shuman wasn't wearing a seat belt.
His mom started the campaign WAS to encourage other kids to buckle up.
Signs are posted at GW and students have WAS stickers on their cars. Wednesday, teachers hit the parking lot to make sure the seat belt campaign was being put in action.
Ten students and parents were found not wearing their seat belts. Teachers used the opportunity to educate drivers about the importance of buckling up, and to pass out WAS stickers.
The principal, Melissa Ruddle, says last year a random seat belt check found that 39% of students weren't wearing their seat belts.
Police say alcohol also played a factor in Shuman's death. Prosecutors say the driver of the car he was in, Kevin "Josh" Jackson, had been drinking. Jackson was in court last week to face a misdemeanor charge of DUI causing death. Jackson pleaded not guilty.
