CABELL COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A fight over player eligibility means one local middle school’s impressive season comes to a screeching halt.

The Huntington Middle School football team won all but one of its games this year. However on Thursday, the West Virginia Secondary Schools Athletic Commission took away all of those wins.

It’s all because one player on the team was disqualified because he played a game with another midget league team while also on the roster for Huntington Middle.

The move did not sit well with the players parents. On Thursday parents voiced their disgust with the Cabell County School Board.

With tears in their eyes and emotions running high parents claim it’s just not fair that all of the teams hard work this season would be thrown away.

“He’s crushed. All of our kids are crushed. They worked really hard to get where they are at,” said Amber Shannon, a parent.

The school board though, says there is nothing they can do besides simply follow the WVSSAC Rules.

“It’s a horrible thing and I hate that it happened, the timing of it, but its something we have to react to,” said Todd Alexander with the Cabell County School Board.

The school board says someone did come forward to point out the rule violation. Parents say its how and when this person came forward that makes this so tough to swallow.

“Whoever had this information they waited until the right time to turn it in, at the playoffs. So they wouldn’t have to play us,” Shannon said.

“To take victories from a team that’s worked hard all season, it’s a difficult thing. It has not been fun in anyway. It’s probably the worst thing that’s happened all year and hopefully it will never happen again,” Alexander said.

Despite the bad news everyone at Huntington Middle School, including parents, teachers and students rallied around the football team Thursday.

They say no matter what happens they know the team is still number one.

All coaches have to attend a rules clinic every year. It’s one way the WVSSAC tries to keep situations like this one from happening.

The Cabell County School Board said it might actually look into creating a check list for coaches just to add some extra security to keep this from ever happening again.

Many parents told WSAZ.com they still plan to attend Thursday night’s playoff games.

They say they’ll be in the stands with their children who will be wearing their uniforms in protest.
