UPDATE @ 9p.m. Monday 11/9
HURRICANE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Hurricane Mayor Scott Edwards asked City Council members who voted against paying the city's bills this month to resign, but they refused.
Edwards' request came during a special meeting Monday night. He called for the resignation of Patty Hager, Lana Call and Donald Chaney.
All three voted against paying some bills for city projects last week.
They claimed they were concerned about the costs involved. Tonight they refused to resign from council. Furthermore, council members unanimously voted Monday to pay the city's bills.
"It's funny how three people when I was out of town say, 'Let's just go on ahead and do a little political grandstanding,' which is what occurred last week," Edwards said. "It is very clear to everybody that they want council to pay the bills."
The mayor said their actions were costly for the city and beyond.
"It embarrassed the city, but it also hurt the city," Edwards said. "It hurt relations with vendors, and it just hurt everything."
Coucilman Donald Chaney says the council never intended to give Hurricane a black eye.
"The vote council made at was not grandstanding as was told or for any other reason, only to gain more information before finalizing paying the bills that were presented at the time," said Chaney.
The mayor added that he will avoid missing future meetings and strive to have all seven council members present, as well.
UPDATE: Friday, November 6 @ 9:00am
HURRICANE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- According to Hurricane Mayor Scott Edwards, all city employees received their paychecks on Friday.
Earlier this week, some people were concerned as to whether or not they would be paid when city council voted 3-2 against paying the city's bills in November.
City leaders met with their attorneys and found it was legal to still pay their employees.
A special city council meeting has been called for Monday, November 9 at 8:00 p.m. to discuss the bills in question.

ORIGINAL STORY
HURRICANE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- If the vote stands, the city of Hurricane won't be paying its November bills.
Hurricane Mayor Scott Edwards tells WSAZ.com city council voted 3-2 Monday night against paying the city's bills in November.
Edwards missed the meeting because he's on a business trip in Alabama.
Patty Hager, Lana Call and Donald Chaney were the council members who voted not to pay the bills.
According to the mayor, they felt they had too many questions about the bills to vote to pay them. The items in question, include buying coats for Hurricane police officers, activities at City Park, and some paving projects.
Mayor Edwards tells WSAZ.com all of these items were approved within the city's budget.
The Police Chief says he ordered the light-weight jackets for his officers because they didn't have any to wear. The jackets cost the city $500 and was paid with funds from the department's $10,000 equipment fund.
The mayor says he will call a special meeting when he returns to the city later this week. He says city leaders must decide how they want to be involved in the financial decisions.
Right now, the mayor, along with several other officials are meeting with the city's attorney to see if this vote will keep the city from paying its employees.
Edwards tells WSAZ.com he hopes to have a definite answer on that by this afternoon.
The mayor says the city's in a better financial standing than ever before and this is actually the first time in the city's history where council has voted not to pay its bills.
Councilman Donald Chaney tells WSAZ.com he voted down the bills because he wanted to clear up some expenditures before the city spent money.
Chaney says sometimes you just need to "get people to wake-up."
He says there were some bills on the print out that needed to be cleared up, including a basketball court at city park and a concession stand.
Chaney says he's not sure council approved the projects or if they were special project add-ons.
He says the employees will get paid because they are calling a special meeting when the mayor gets back.
Chaney is also concerned the city's department heads don't come to the meetings anymore and he would like to see that change.
Patty Hager is another council member who voted against paying the bills.
Hager says she and her two counterparts questioned if some of the spending is on unnecessary things.
Hager says she has some questions surrounding a concession stand at City Park with a price tag of about $150,000.
Hager says after the meeting she spoke with City Manager Ben Newhouse and felt a little bit better about the situation on where the money was spent.
Hager also told WSAZ.com she doesn't think city employees need to be concerned about getting paid because salaries were not a part of the spending issues that were even in question.

If I were Don,Patty, and Lana I'ed be using that city lawyer.I wasn't at the meeting just know what I read on the internet. Calling the three idiots by Edward clearly is against city code of conduct,(Art.115-sect 115.8.) He owes these councilpeople a public apology. I'm sure if you or I did that in a council meeting,we'ed be setting in the county jail for the night.Plus paying Hurricae a BIG FAT FINE. I for one wish they would ask more ?s about how the taxpayer money is spend
And when those fire fighters are called out to do their job they do, it could be you their saving one day. You probably don't consider that because of the jealousy you have against them. I'd like you to try to do a better job.
Just a thought...don't park in the fire lane...that is why it says...NO PARKING...FIRE LANE.
