COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Ohio voters have delivered a victory to large farm operators, approving a new industry-dominated board to oversee livestock care.
With 45 percent of precincts reporting Tuesday, the issue was leading 65 percent to 35 percent.
The measure was designed to thwart efforts of animal rights groups such as the Humane Society of the United States that are intent on outlawing the close confinement of laying hens, breeding sows and veal calves.
Laws outlawing keeping those animals in cramped cages or crates have passed in seven states.
The ballot issue was viewed as a blueprint for other rural states to avoid such laws being imposed.
Ohio's livestock care board will have 13 members of both parties representing farmers, veterinarians, food safety experts, and consumers. It will have one animal rights advocate.
The Humane Society vowed Tuesday to mount a future Ohio ballot campaign instituting farm animal protections.

This is a very good thing not only for consumers, but farmers as well in Ohio. The HSUS is not your local Humane Societies, they are an extreme activist group whose goal to run farmers out of business. Farmers are very caring humans, they take care of their animals and give them the best quality and care. To say anything different would be an insult to the people who feed us everyday and to the number one industry in Ohio, Agriculture. It is their livelyhood and they should be commended. Don't be fooled, the HSUS wants to take your choice of eating meat away. Congrats to the Ohio Farm Bureau and all the other Agriculture Organizations who joined forces to fight this large, wealthy, activist group!!
To Roy.... What in the world are you thinking! Ban Truck drivers from the road? How else are you going to get gas, clothes and food? The saying goes: If you bought it, a truck brought it.
This was not the ideal choice but it did keep PETA from coming in and doing what they want. Much like the health boards who have taken smoking away in many places without peoples input.
