CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Hugs, tears and laughter were all part of an emotional reunion Saturday as a Fort Hood Soldier returned home.
Army Specialist Jason Lipford has been through a lot this week. His unit was safe Thursday when a gunman opened fired on the Texas Army base, killing 13 people and injuring 30 others.
“The site that got hit, our unit had just finished up there Wednesday the day before it happened. We just missed it,” Lipford said. “I just don't understand it. Guys just coming back or getting ready to deploy, and who would think it would happen at our own base in the states.”
The tragedy on his base isn’t the reason for his return home. Jason has been eager to meet up with cousin, Nick Moriarty. He’s a Marine and will deploy for Afghanistan in just two weeks.
“Once we joined, we've been on different schedules. This is a rare occasion when we get to see each other and hang out before we head out again,” said Lance Corporal Nick Moriarty.
The two have always been close and now have a special military bond. They were both inspired to join by Nick’s brother who is also a soldier. They’ve become used to being apart, but always welcome a chance to catch up.
“I haven't seen him in close to two years now. I’m really thankful I got to come home and see him,” Lipford said.
Jason will head back to Texas on Wednesday. He begins Ranger school in January and is expected to be deployed to Iraq in late August.
