W.Va. Women File Lawsuits Over Treatment in Jail
State officials are looking into complaints of widespread sexual misconduct at prisons and jails in West Virginia.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - State officials are looking into
complaints of widespread sexual misconduct at prisons and jails in
West Virginia.
Lawsuits have been filed by 21 women who allege they face misconduct ranging from sexual harassment to rape in the state's
correctional facilities.
Almost all the individuals being accused of misconduct are men. Mike Woelfel, a lawyer representing one of the women, says the lawsuits show that male guards shouldn't be allowed to supervise female prisoners.
Joe Thornton, Deputy Secretary of the Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety, says that's not the answer. He says there aren't enough female guards for that to happen.
