HUNTINGTON, W.Va (WSAZ) -- Alzheimer's disease is an illness that in some way, affects almost everyone.

Sunday night, folks in Huntington gathered near the Fountain in Ritter Park to shine some light on the topic.

The Cabell County Community Services Organization held a commemorative candle lighting. The organization's goal was to remember those who had or currently have Alzheimer's disease, support their families and help them learn about community resources.

Robert Roswall with the CCCSO said this event is so special because it brings people together.

"I think it makes them feel better to know that there's more people than just them," Roswall said. "I mean, it's kind of lonely when you could be stuck at home with your loved one you've been with for fifty years and they're slowly passing away from you in the sense of knowing you."

Those who have lost loved ones to the disease say it is important to build a network, or some kind of support system to help handle the pain.
