CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Police are searching for a man who apparently pepper-sprayed himself during an armed robbery in Charleston Monday morning.
It happened at about 2:40 a.m. at the Park-Mart at the corner of MacCorkle Avenue and 35th Street in Kanawha City.
Metro 911 dispatchers say the man, who was armed with a knife and pepper spray, tried to spray the clerk, but got himself instead.
Charleston Police detectives say the robber approached a man sitting at a video lottery machine, grabbed him from behind, and the threw him to the ground. He then pepper-sprayed that man and grabbed a bank bag with cash in it before taking off, according to police.
K-9 units were called to the scene to help look for the thief.
The suspect was wearing a ski mask, dark blue hoodie and dark-colored gym pants. He's about 5'8" tall and weighs about 140 pounds.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Charleston Police at (304) 348-6480.
