ATHENS, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Athens City Council is going to study the placement of surveillance cameras on Court Street and elsewhere downtown.

The request to do so came Monday night from City Law Director Pat Lang.

Lang says the cameras are legal and may make the area safer, but their use raises personal liberty and constitutional questions.

Mayor Paul Wiehl says the cameras are used by the Athens Police Department.

The surveillance camera issue will now be discussed by Athens City Council's Committee of the Whole.

The cameras are a good idea, maybe the idiots that roam the streets at night might think twice. If they are being responsible adults like they should be there should not be a problem. The cameras only protest the innocent. It is not big brother it is called responsibility seeing that most of the problem is on court street.
