++ Tug Fork River at Williamson
++ Tug Fork River at Kermit
++ Guyandotte River at Logan
++ Guyandotte River at Man
++ Guyandotte River at Branchland
++ Coal River at Tornado
++ Big Sandy River at Fullers Station
++ Kanawha River at Charleston (South Side Bridge)

Heavy rains have caused a serious situation in the coal fields of West Virginia and eastern Kentucky.

The National Weather Service has EXTENDED a flood warning until late Sunday night for the Guyandotte River in LOGAN County. The NWS reports that at 10am, the stage was 25.5 feet and that minor flooding is occurring and minor flooding is expected. The flood stage at Logan is 23 feet and the river will continue rising to near 26.5 feet this afternoon---and the river will fall below flood stage late this evening. At stages near 26 feet numerous roads are flooded and railroad tracks above and below town are flooded.

The National Weather Service in has also issued a flood warning for the Coal River at Tornado in KANAWHA, BOONE, and LINCOLN counties until late Sunday night. The river flood warning continues for the Coal River at Tornado. As of 4 pm Sunday, the stage was 25.9 feet and moderate flooding is expected. Flood stage is 25 feet for the Coal River -- and the National Weather Service predicts it will continue to rise this evening, and crest around 28 feet late this evening. The Coal River will fall below flood stage by dawn Monday at the river forecast point at Tornado. At stages near 25 feet, water begins to cover the state highway approximately 150 to 200 feet downstream from the Tornado bridge. Smith Creek and Ferrell Road become impassable from backwater approximately 1 to 2 miles from the bridge. The river banks overflow near the river gauge. The forecast crest of 28 feet is a foot lower than the 29 foot crest observed back in November of 2003.

A flood warning has been EXTENDED for PIKE and FLOYD counties in eastern Kentucky until 5:15am Monday. At 5:09pm, the Pike County emergency manager has reported four roads closed and the highway patrol indicates that some roads in Floyd County are still closed. The Tug Fork is expected to stay above flood stage until Monday morning and this will cause backup on some of the tributaries and will cause some roads to stay closed during this time.

JUST IN: The National Weather Service has issues a flood warning for MARTIN County in northeast Kentucky until 7:00am Monday. At 7:07pm, County dispatch for Martin County reported that Highway 292 was closed in 3 locations: near Fluty Lick, Mount Sterling, and Little Elk of Hode. This flooding is due to the flooding on the Tug Fork, which will not crest until midnight tonight and then begin to fall.

WHAT IS A FLOOD WARNING? A flood warning means that flooding is imminent or has been reported. Stream rises will be slow and flash flooding is not expected. However, all interested parties should take necessary precautions immediately.

We are currently getting the latest reports from all counties affected by flooding. Please check back for the latest information.

COUNTY-BY-COUNTY REPORTS

BOONE: Dispatchers say flooding is everywhere. High water is covering Route 17, Route 85, Route 1, Route 3 at Comfort (water is at street level, but not flooded at Julian). Dispatchers also tell us evacuations are in progress in Madison, Prenter, Ridgeview. Rescues are underway in the Comfort area after cars have driven into high water. Emergency officials urge you to stay inside or go to higher ground away from the water.

LINCOLN: Dispatchers say most of the high water is in the southern part of the county. No evacuations have been necessary. Route 10 near Harts is currently closed due to high water.

LOGAN: Director of Emergency Services Roger Bryant reports: most flooding seems to hit the central part of the county, and a small part of the north end was affected. He said with exception to some water over the roads, the southern part of the county was spared. Here are the hardest hit areas: Island Creek, Deskins Addition, & Cherry Tree. Bryant says Route 10 is currently shut down at the south end of Logan near the intersection of the boulevard. Route 44 and Route 17 are also reportedly closed due to high water. Bryant says many people had to be rescued overnight and two people are still unaccounted for.

KANAWHA: Dispatchers say flooding is widespread. The hardest hit areas are in the eastern part of the county--specifically in Handley, Malden, and Slaughters Creek. There are also reports of flooding on Smith Road off Oakwood Road in the South Hills section of Charleston. No evacuations are in progress.

MINGO: Dispatchers say there is high water all over the county. Many roads are flooded, including the underpass in WIlliamson. Route 52 is also closed in several parts due to mudslides and high water. The Tug River is at 28.4 feet, and flood stage for the river is 32 feet.

ROANE: Dispatchers advise there were reports of high water earlier today, but the water has since gone down and there are no major closures to report.

NICHOLAS: Dispatchers say there's flooding all over the county. Reports have just come in about a large mudslide on Route 39 W on the west side oft eh Little Elk Mountain near Swiss. Traffic is able to get through right now, but drivers should use caution in the area.

PIKE & FLOYD (KY): 911 dispatchers report flooding throughout both counties. They say a portion of Route 460 has collapsed near Shelbiana in Pike County, closing that part of the road. No other major closures are reported.

EARLY MORNING REPORTS:

Most of the flooding appeared to be in Mingo County. 911 dispatchers tell WSAZ that the hardest hit areas are Duncan Fork and Laurel Creek -- evacuations were necessary early in the morning there.

A mudslide on Route 52 between Williamson and Delbarton has closed Route 52 for the time being. Dispatchers tell us one car was pushed into a hillside when the mud rushed on to the road, injuring the driver. We're told he went to hospital, but he didn't appear to be seriously hurt.

Dispatchers tell us at least 12-13 roads are closed in Mingo County due to high water. They tell us the northbound lanes of Route 119 near Route 65 have some water on them, but the road is still able to be driven on with caution. Several wrecks were reported--and dispatchers attribute those to the weather.

911 dispatchers in Logan County report no major flooding in the county, but said flood prone areas are experiencing high water.

In Kanawha County, dispatchers tell us most of the high water is contained to the Pinch and Cabin Creek area. In Pinch, there have been reports of flooding near Indian Creek Road. In eastern Kanawha County, high water has closed Slaughters Creek Road. Reports of flooding have also come in from the Eskdale area.

In Boone County, dispatchers tell us no major flooding has been reported, but there is high water throughout the county. No roads have been closed yet.

I agree with every last comment on this site. I am merely a preteen, browsing the internet to see if her school day will not occur. I think that it is ridiculous that you recieve voice mail if you call with every other parent's complaint. You don't get voice mail for a phone call to 911, and this matter may be just as important

The Pepsi Man who help rescue the man out of the burning house in Chesapeake was my husband David Johnson of Ironton Ohio. He was just glad to help the man.

Are you listening Mr. Dials?

Posted by: Verna on Apr 18, 2007 at 04:31 PM
My home is a danger for anyone to live in. We have had to drink, bathe, cook, and brush teeth with bottled water. There were gas wells being drilled near our property that produced poisonous gases. The odor from the gases was so strong that it gave my husband and I severe headaches. Sometimes my kids complained of these headaches too. My husband and I always had these headaches whenever we slept in our bedroom. We bought another home in Williamson. Right now I am paying on two homes and My husband does not work. I have three children to support and the bills are killing us. Fema wanted to condemn our home but my husband would not let them because we did not have any place to go at the time. All Fema could offer us was temporary housing. Where would we go once the temporary housing was not available anymore? Would my children, my husband and I end up on the streets? I am a college professor at Southern. I try hard to make ends meet but how was I supposed to know that we would have all these problems once we moved in this house. Not only is our water not usable, but we have had a major mudslide causing us to lose a big part of our driveway and yard. Instead of the neighbors trying to help us they have caused us more problems. I don't have any photos of my home or mudslide but it is terrible. When I saw the mudslide for the first time, I almost cried. It did over $20,000 in damages. People have told my husband that he would die trying to repair it. It is a fifty foot drop from our yard to the road below us. Does anyone have any suggestions? Please help us. We could not get any help from the housing authority.

I can't believe how bad water got in some places where I live the water get bad but nothing major not like the pictures that I've seen on WSAZ's photo gallery. In places like Boone County it got extremelly bad exspecially down town Madison it look like a swamp. Mingo county was just as bad. The Kanawha River got up really high to on to the Bulivard now thats crazy.

Once again my child attended school today where there was no WATER.... shouldn't the state look at this as a health risk. how are the children suppose to wash their hand and what are they to do for drinking purposes? This is a situation that has got out of hand. As you see a lot of parents have posted on here with their concerns. It seems to be the only place we are able to voice our concerns, considering all you get is voice mail when you call to speak to someone in charge, and e-mails go unanswered. I agree with the person who posted asking WSAZ to help the parents. The schools in Mingo county are in need of a leader who is for the children, and willing to hear the parents. Maybe if enough parents spoke up with the help of a great media outlet, the gov. would take a break spending million remodeling his mansion and start paying attention to what is happening in Mingo county. After all we are the forgotten county in the heart of the Billion Dollar coal fields. Parents it is time for us to band together and MAKE OUR VOICES BE HEARD. Thank You

I Agree with all the parents that have made comments on here concerning Mr Dials.I would rather my son have to make a day up at the end of the year then be put in harms way. I was one of the many parents that did not allow my son to attend school yesterday. My child means more to me then his perfect attendence. I truely think this is something that the great news reporters of WSAZ could help us with. I think a meeting should be set up with the board of education. Let MR Dials answer the parents personally. I my self would love to hear his excuses why he won't cancel school when it need be. I personally know of a lot of parents that have had it with Mr Dials, and would not be shy about speaking up at a meeting. Maybe it is time we get someone who 1st lives in our county and 2nd Cares about the well being of children and not just how many days in a row can the school go without being closed. Obviously this man has no heart. One thing i am sure he does have is a fat wallet. So to the reporters at WSAZ will you help the parents show their voices, if the board of education don't care maybe you will. Thank You

I went out for the first time today since the flood Saturday Night. Ther are still roads here in Logan County that they have got blocked off. In one place there is still water in the road. In Bradshaw Holler right up above where I live they are asking people to stay away from there due to them trying to get work done so it will be safe again. The road where I live they are having to repair because it has washed alot of it off. They had to come in here yesterday and dig the creek out again as they do everytime we flood and it has done no good. All we can do is just pray that everything will be back to normal before long.

I AM WRITING BECAUSE I AM VERY UPSET THAT MR. DIALS DECIDED TO HAVE SCHOOL. WHEN I SENT MY KID TO SCHOOL, I FIND OUT AT THE END OF THE DAY THAT THE WATER IN MINGO COUNTY IS CONTAMINATED, AND THAT THE KIDS COULDN'T WASH THEIR HANDS OR DRINK OUT OF THE FOUNTAINS AT SCHOOL. I COULDN'T BELIEVE MY EARS. MY CHILD IS KINDLY BACKWARDS AND SHY AND HE TOLD ME WHEN HE GOT HOME THAT HE WAS AFRAID TO ASK THE TEACHER FOR A BOTTLE OF WATER WHEN HE GOT THIRSTY BECAUSE HE WAS AFRAID. I THINK IT IS A SHAME, A LOW DOWN DIRTY SHAME. MR. DIALS DOESN'T CARE ABOUT THE SAFETY OF OUR CHILDREN AND NO ONE CAN MAKE ME THINK IT OTHERWISE. ALL PARENTS WAS KEPT IN THE DARK ABOUT THE WATER PROBLEM IN MINGO COUNTY. I THINK IT IS A SHAME. IF WE DONT SEND OUR KIDS TO SCHOOL, THEN WE GET THE LAW IN OUR FACE, SO TELL ME WHAT PARENTS ARE SUPPOST TO DO? I JUST DON'T KNOW ANYMORE.

God Bless and good luck to all those in the southern end of Wayne County West Virginia.Dunlow,Wilsondale,Crum,Stonecoal,etc. The roads have been neglected in these areas for years many elderly as well as young have no means to get emergency things due to the lack of Wayne County DOH. I have many years experience with this dept. The four lane that Tolsia highway was to be has been negleted for way to long.Dunlow has no escape creeks need dredged from all the silt from the mountain washes. The county is beautiful and so negleted for all to long please help my neighbors in need. Good luck to all in THE SOUTHERN END OF WAYNE COUNTY

Posted by: Brenda on Apr 16, 2007 at 11:54 PM
I feel great remorse for all those who are trapped in in the Southern end of Wayne County.Dunlow,Wilsondale,Ft.Gay,Crum,Stone Coal,Jennies Creek,Etc. From years of fighting for our rights with the WV State road they never seem to remember to improve our roads and make them safe for us and our children. It has went on for years.God bless you all who are stranded in these areas.

Posted by: B on Apr 16, 2007 at 11:48 PM
Everyone in the southern end of Wayne county should speak louder voices need to be heard.Dunlow, Stonecoal,Wilsondale,Ft.Gay need to be loud because our state road area does not care about us. We are the hind end of a bull long forgotten in these areas. What happened to the four lane project? Why does Fema keep paying out and not trying to dip the creeks and if need be relocate. This end of Wayne county is beautiful and loved by ourselves and our neighboors but overlooked by The State roads for the choosen ones. God bless us all.

well im not sending my kids when the roads are like this they can have it all week.... in hurricane of stopover,ky they are wanting the parents to take there kids to the mouth of the holler and wait for the bus.then go and pick them up at the same place.this is ridiculous alot of parents don't have transportation to get there kids down there.all i know is mine isn't going....

Why is cabell county having school? The roads in and around salt rock are flooded and probably will be for a couple days. How are these students suppose to get to school? Why doesn't cabell county care about the safety of the kids instead of making there so call quote..

Posted by: Shocked on Apr 16, 2007 at 05:53 PM
I just heard on the news, that Mr Dials had the excuse that all schools in Mingo Co. met the requirements???? Well thats all fine but what about the roads they have to travel to get there. What is wrong with that man??

Posted by: Brittany on Apr 16, 2007 at 05:51 PM
I think that schools should be called off all week.. Many people lost everyhting they ever had. And the roads are dangerous. Im sure if Mr. Dials has children he wouldnt want them on the road in a school bus..

Posted by: Amanda on Apr 16, 2007 at 05:40 PM
Ok in reference to the comment about all of us talking about Mr Dials...wether or not we send our students is not the point. The point is it is tooooo dangerous and Mr. Dials never wants to close schools here for anything, he has no idea what the impact of the flood was here and like some of our Mingo Co ppl said below we still have roads that are not safe to drive over and mudslides and everything. I personally did not send my child today, he is more important than being counted absent, but schools should not have been in session, and thats the point. I suppose you would have to be in Mingo to understand what its like to have Mr Dials refuse to close schools regaurdless of conditions here. I, as most parents are very upset over all this.

Posted by: me on Apr 16, 2007 at 05:19 PM
Well they are having school in pike county tomorrow also.the roads are still bad around freeburn, and in hurricane creek of stopover

Posted by: Kay on Apr 16, 2007 at 04:05 PM
All you people talking about Mr. Dials and Mingo Co. School how many of you send your kids to school ??? I know I would not send mine so what if they did get counted absent at least they would not be in danger

I agree with all the residents of Mingo County. I have a 10 year old daughter that goes to school at Mtewan Junior High. She was with me this weekend and I was unable to get her home yesterday as well as her dad could not get here to get her. So I called the school this morning and I had to tell them the reason why she was not in school. I think that it was an unstable decision to have school on a 2 hour delay in Mingo County as well as the 2 hour delay they had in Wyoming County today. But if it was for something that the teachers wanted to do or an ISE day they would have not had it. There are still spots around here in the Logan County area. Some roads are still closed and the state road has been out all morning trying to do the best that they can do and in a timely fashion. I commend the workers for the good work that I have seen that they have done. We went to Williamson to meet my little girls' dad and the Tug Fork was well above the stage that it usally is. I agree with the concerned parents and students as well for having the 2 hour delay. I am just happy that nothing bad came out of them not closing the schools. I will let you all know if I hear or find out anything else. Thank You for keeping all this up to date so everyone will know what is going on and where it is happening you guys ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You are the best.

My teachers at school today were shocked that we had school. Some of our teachers didn't even come because they couldn't get to school. Every Mingo County Parent has a reason to be upset with Mr. Dwight Dials.

Posted by: ???? on Apr 16, 2007 at 02:22 PM
Burch High School shouldn't had school today that was the most stupid thing ever done by the board. Parnets should realize if the roads are bad dont send your kids then maybe they will call school when it really should be called off.Its STUPID!!!!!!!!!

I Am A Student Of Tug Valley High School. Today Our Classes Were Canceled. I Disagree With Mingo County Board Of Educations Decision To Operate On A Two Hour Delay When Neighboring Counties Are Closed For The Day. I Have A Little Brother And He Was Unable To Go To School For The Fact That The Creeks And Rivers In Mingo County Are Still Overflowing.

As a Police Officer in Mingo County, I see alot of the damage and hear even more of it and I agree with the parents concerns over the safety of our children in these situations. We even have a boil advisory for our water, what are our children supposed to do dureing the course of the day if they need something to drink? Is the school system going to supply them with clean drinking water? I find it very disturbing that Mr Dials does not understand the situation and the risk involved. I can personaly tell you that there are roads in our area that I wouldnt risk takeing a cruiser across much less a school bus, and for the most part the roads have not even been cleared, there are still logs, tires and misc. other items in the roads. Im sure this man is educated enough to comprehend the dangers, isnt he?

There may only be a handful of people who reside on Lick Branch Road in Hatfield, Ky, but they are still stranded as of right now. The little bridge that leads over to their hollow is still covered by the water and is riddled with debris, including a tree. My parents live there and so do two of my siblings. They cannot get out for work or for any supplies that they may need. I am glad that the water is receeding, but please keep them in mind as they are still being tormented by this flood.

I ALSO AGREE THAT MINGO CO. SCHOOLS SHOULD HAVE BEEN CANCLED TODAY (4/16/07). EVERYONE SHOULD MAKE THEIR COMMENTS AND CONCERNS TO THE STATE SUPERINTENDENT AT: dvermill@access.k12.wv.us

Posted by: ME on Apr 16, 2007 at 12:03 PM
THE WAY I SEE IT THEY SHOULD CALL SCHOOL OFF FOR THE ENTIRE WEEK IN ALL COUNTIES THAT WAS HIT BY THIS FLOOD TO GET TH ROADS AND EVERYTHING CLEANED UP AND FIXED.CAUSE WHEN THEY PUT THSES BIG BUSES LOADED DOWN WITH THESE KIDS ON THESE ROADS WHERE THEY HAVE BEEN FLOODED ISN'T GOING TO BE SAFE.THEY ARE RISKIN THE LIVES OF THE KIDS AND THE BUS DRIVERS JUST FOR MONEY.NOW THATS MY OPINION

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 16, 2007 at 11:23 AM
Mr Dials has spent this entire year proving over and over again to the mingo county students and parents that he has ABSALUTLY no concern for these students whatsoever. I thought I had seen the worst of it when I watched as he put our children on buses on roads so slick that only for an emergency would I have driven on them. And I also watched for the first time in my life the busses, with our children on them creeping by my house because of the slick conditions. I thought I had seen the worst of it, but now he has shown us that he wasn't finished with our kids yet. State of emergency....... continued flood warnings for mingo county..........washed out roads..........children who lost their homes and everything in them.........and yet he sees no reason to cancel school!!!!! Who needs the education here?????? Its not our kids its him!!!!!!

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 16, 2007 at 10:15 AM
are we suppose to be having school even when the governor has called a state of emergency?

Posted by: concern parent on Apr 16, 2007 at 08:23 AM
What in the world is wrong with Mingo County Board of Education! There should not be any school for the ENTIRE Mingo County area. Between Flood Waters and Rock Slides almost everyone in Mingo County was effected someway.

Anyone wanting to travel north on Rt 10 from Harts the road is blocked just north of St Rt 37 next to Lick Fork Rd. The Guyandotte river has fell about 6in since about 4:00 am this morning

Someone please explain to me how Mr. Dwight D. Dials came to the conclusion that a 2 hour delay would be sufficient in insuring the safety of our students in Mingo county. I am just livid with outrage! How is it possible that a man that lives in an entirely separate county can have even an inkling of how truly devastated we are here? Parents are waking this morning only to face the nightmarish task of putting their homes and lives back together again. I would say a great many of them will be unable to even go to their jobs today and yet, Mr. Dials thinks we should all be able to pull it together enough to get our kids off to school??? Please!!! I am so fed up with this man that I just don't even have the words to convey it to the fullest. This man is clearly NOT concerned with the welfare of our children and one would have a difficult time of convincing not only myself but many other parents in this county otherwise. I just can't understand this. Is Mr. Dials simply ignorant to our situation here in Mingo or is he just completely uncaring? What is his agenda here? Why is this man so reluctant to cancel school in this area regardless of the circumstances? Someone seriously needs to address these questions and provide some answers to the parents of Mingo county because, and I feel very confident that I can speak for the majority of parents here, we are fed up with Mr. Dials cavalier attitude when it comes to our children's safety! And just to make you aware, I will be sending an exact copy of this email to EVERY local news station, newspaper and parent that I can, along with an encouragement for them to do the same! Enough is enough! A.D. Crum Delbarton, WV

The creeks here are like mega high. You really need to start letting Man know whats going on.

Posted by: Lynn on Apr 16, 2007 at 03:54 AM
First, I want to thank WSAZ for their wonderful coverage of the news. You are the best news team out there. Then, I too, do not understand why Mingo Co. is having school tomorrow. Instead of being on delay, school should be closed. Also, Southern WV Comm. College, both at Logan and Williamson, should cancel all their classes tomorrow. I am sure the students can make up their work if classes are cancelled but if they have school and students are injured trying to get to class, this would really be terrible. Southern should cancel because Williamson is still under a flood warning and the road is still blocked and Logan's campus is located up Mud Fork and this always floods. We need to keep the welfare of the students in mind. Keep them off the roads until the highways are properly checked.

I think that Mr. Dials should get out and take a look around the county he needs to go ahead and close the schools down some of these kids lost there homes and he doesn't seem to care not only that he wants to risk puttin a bus on a road that could very well just give way as it travels come on now lets not dumb make the right decision and close the schools...

Posted by: Tammy on Apr 16, 2007 at 02:53 AM
If Mingo County has been the worst county so far hit by the flooding, then why wouldn't they cancel school??!!!! Sounds like the people here may reconsider who they want in authority of this decision during the next election!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Cliff on Apr 16, 2007 at 01:45 AM
The conditions from Ranger Fas Chek to Rt 37 is currently blocked but Rt 37 is clear just some small stream back ups nothing major. The only thing to worry about is people that live closer to the Guyandotte river which is holding steady now

I have an uncle that lives up route 37 in lincoln county (close to the pizza shop and car wash on 37 and the interchange at route 10). If anyone can tell me how the conditions are up there it would be greatly appreciated. I just want to make sure he is safe!

We live up Riverbend Road at Verner. Part of the road has already fell into the river. The water is washing the road out and the pavement is falling in. This road is our means of getting out of the hollow. If the entire road falls in, which it looks like it might be by in the morning, we may be stranded until the State Road fills it back in.

This is the worst flood since the R.D. Bailey dam was opened.I have lived in the same location beside the Guyandotte River since 1974, and since the dam became operational, all flooding has been mild. This morning at 4 AM, the river was up but ok. By 7AM, it was rising so fast we barely had time to save my animals. All my things in our outbuildings were destroyed. Forthe first time in over 15 years, water got into that building. The thing that angers me is IF we had had any warning from radio, tv, or internet sites, etc., we'd have had time to evacuate. I have never seen the river rise so fast. Where were all the sources we rely on to tell us when something like this will or may happen. What the heck was going on at R.D. Bailey? Rumor is, no one was even at the dam until 7AM to do anything to help with the water problem. I think someone needs to investigate what went wrong.Something wasn't right about this situation. Living by this river all these years, I know the patterns of flooding in this area, and all this water rising so rapidly is not typical when the dam is operating correctly. And, why didn't the Logan radio station or TV warn us? Logan broadcast a race car race all day.

I am also concerned about the conditions of roads and bridges our kids will be traveling on without checking damages. Mingo schools should be closed until conditions are safe for travel. Many hollows have washed debris out into roadways causing roads to break off.

The main Road thru meethouse Ky in martin county kentucky is closed and is not looked at to be opened for atleast 4 more days. A mudslide at least 12 foot High and about a 1/4 of a mile long is blocking the road. The stat dept. has tried to dig it out but they said everytime they try to dig more mud comes off the hill and the trees that are on the hill cracks like there going to fall so they have put it up to contracters.

My kids and family are safe and was evacuated quite some time ago. (they hadnt called cause they thought I wouldnt know about it so soon!!) Their story is that New Hamlin and lower Hamlin all were taken out and that there were only 3 people that refused to be evacuated. Thanks and keep me posted

someone needs to really think about what could happen if the roads gives way as a school bus full of kids makes its run. Does anyone check all areas of the county????

Posted by: Tammy on Apr 16, 2007 at 12:18 AM
Our creeks up here are going down, and I'm thankful not to have gotten flooded. My concern is for them that got flooded and mingo county schools being on a 2 hr. delay, dont they care about them that may not have a home to go to or can they even get to their home at all. The board needs to reconsider that decision and close the school down. It would be alot different if it was them in our shoes.

Posted by: betty on Apr 16, 2007 at 12:16 AM
the creek in front of my house, is out of control, it has broken the bank and part of our road here in front of our home, and now parts of this area have no water, due to the flooding, school is on a 2 hour delay, thats awful, this is why i have chosen not to send my 6 yr old son to school tomorrow, because im not taking any chances with his life, on these water covered roads.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 16, 2007 at 12:13 AM
With the flooding that has taken place in Mingo County I think it is a shame that the Board of Education isn't taking into consideration what is going on. Come on give me a break there needs to be no school in Mingo County.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 16, 2007 at 12:11 AM
School should be closed in Mingo County. I guess we can only hope no one gets hurt. Too many communities have been damaged-- roads, homes etc. We do not need to take any chances with our children.

Posted by: Ronnette on Apr 15, 2007 at 11:54 PM
There has been alot of flooding throughout the hallows. Roads have been washed out in several places. Also several mud slides. The Tug River is still rising! With all that Mingo Co. schools are on a 2hr. delay. I am very concerned about that decision. I do not think that it is safe for our children to be traveling on the roads so soon without checking all area damages. Alot of families are tring to clean up in Delbarton, Lenore, Kermit, Trace Creek, Duncan Fork, and Belo areas. Also alot of other locations in Mingo Co. So why are they not closing Mingo Co. schools?

My daughter told me earlier today that the ball field was flooding. I have to assumed that my X took them to a shelter there in Hamlin. I cant get ahold of anyone. Thanks for the update Dianna, Will everyone keep me posted on what is actually happening there in Hamlin. It is MUCH appreciated.

Posted by: Dianna on Apr 15, 2007 at 11:12 PM
Was told the evacuation of parts of Upper Mud River and the lower end of Hamlin were mandatory, not voluntary. It is just precautionary as of right now. A lot of people in Upper Mud River are stranded and the water along the Lion's Club Field/Mud River is touching the road and over at Morris Hollow. So far, Lee's Fishing Lake/Johnson Lake is holding steady, but crews are still pumping water out (who knows where to? the river? I guess that's better than it breaking loose though!) and trying to keep the situation from elevating.

Whites Addition residents were hit hard yet again by the flood waters of this little river that runs in our community, there was 4 1/2 feet to 8 feet of water in the community once again. I live up on the hill here and it saddens me that every time it rains, my neighbors have to worry about wether or not they are going to loose their homes or lives. Is there nothing that can be done to help our community with these types of losses? Thank God that the water has subsided in some places in our community like araound Cheif White's house to the other side of the bridge and yet the rest of the bottom is still got water in it. Please if there is anything that can be done.....help us save our communities in all of the hard hit areas.

It is a shame that the state road wouldnt come up into Whitman to clear the debris from the drains so the water wouldnt flood the holler and trap sickly and elderly to where emergency help couldnt reach them. Like last night, a elderly patient from Patty's Home Away From Home, upper 20 Whitman, had to be transported by vechile to the ambulance at the end of Whitman. And thanks to a gentleman who has the guts to find a dozer and move the 6 inch pipes that the state put in at Skeens, Bradshaw Holler, to let the high waters flow down to try to get some help, thank you.

I think that the school board should call of school since the roads are getting worse as the night approches. why risk our childrens lives by putting them on the buss

Posted by: anonymous on Apr 15, 2007 at 09:55 PM
Most of us in the delbarton and surrounding areas live up hollows that have been impassable most of the day. The Mingo County school system decided to only give the kids a 2 hour delay, when other surrounding counties have closed school.Obviously Mingo county don't care about the families that have been it hard by the flooding and the childrens safety riding buses on roads that have been covered by water and mud. They should Have a heart and CLOSE THE SCHOOLS !!!!!!!!

I am e-mailing with another update. I just heard a litle while ago on the scanner that there was a strong gas odor around the Valley Market and Kroger area. They said that they had turned the gas off and that they was waiting on the gas company to come out and find the leak and then repair it. The creek is still up in the Whitman Creek area but it is not half as high as it was. Thanks for all you have done for the residents of Logan County and the updates you have given to us. I love WSAZ NEWS CHANNEL 3 You guys are the best. Thanks again. I will e-mail again when I have another update.

Some ppl are still stranded and bridges gone and everything and its our kids out there in harms way. Thankfully Logan closed for there kids, they are in our thoughts and prayers, this has been terrible on all of us.

RT. 52 is about 1 to 3 feet under around the Roscoe Mart near Stonecoal Rd. There isn't even a high water sign posted or anything of that sort. The road needs to either be monitored or closed. Nice to know that the WVDOH are on top of things.

Well here I am again with another update.LOL I was just outside and the water has finally went down in the road. But once again it is raining so we know what that might mean. I sure do hope not. The road across our creek when I seen some trucks going up the road there was alot of holes in the road. You really can't tell but it looked like the road is broke off in spots. So I sure do hope that people take extreme precations when they travel up Whitman Holler. I do not know what it looks like on down the holler because I am a chicken and I won't get out on these roads. So I will go for now and if I hear anything else I will let you all know. Thank You so much for posting all these e-mails so everyone will know what and where the danger spots are. I was talking to a friend of mine who has a daughter that works at the Go Mart in Stollings and she is stuck up there cause they are not letting no one in and no one out so she has no idea when she is going to get out to come home so all we can do is just hope and pray that she gets to come home soon.

We took some pictures of the disaster around our area but we havent been able to get the pictures on the web. If I do get them posted i will leave another comment.

I am e-mailing again with an update. They are blocking the roads in a number of places. They are telling people not to be on the road unless they absolutely have to. In 2004 and in 1996 when we were hit hard like this by the time the water was out of our alley it was out of the road. Well that is not the case this time. We are getting a mixture of rain and ice. So all we can do is just hope and pray that it does not get heavy any more. I might be aggravating you but if I hear of anything else I will e-mail you and let youknow. Thank You so much for the updates and all that you have done to let the people know what is going on in Logan County.

My youngest daughter's dad lives in Matewan and he said that it is flooded there also. The water is still in the road in Whitman. Some people are going through it. About 3-4 feet of water, from the river is blocking the rail road underpass. The old Y lot is covered. Water is in the road in several places as you travel up Crooked Creek Hollow.

You may want to add Lincoln County to the list of High Water Reports. Route 3 is covered as well as other areas throughout the county. The river in some places along route 3 looks like an ocean.

Water has left the creek in various sections. Most people are using the back road to enter Dan's Branch. Motorists need to be careful as they travel. It has been reported that some sections of the road may be washed out toward the head of the hollow.

Our house is okay, considering the creek runs past our house. It hit a bridge that we built a couple times, but not anymore. It seems that it is receding a little bit. Our house is fine, but for others, I cannot say the same. Some neighbors are getting hit pretty badly as others are just starting to get hit. Yay for Duncan Fork. (:

The water has left the creek. Drains are full and where I live seem to not be stopped up, just overrun. I just tried to make it to the fork but the water is over the road at the culvert at Roger Ooton's place. My neighbor, Gary Dempsy is about to have water under his house. Andrew has water running like a river through his driveway. His car and 4 wheelers are parked in mine. David is lossing his yard.
