CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The University of Charleston is planning to host a coal forum next month.

President Ed Welch made the announcement at a news conference on Thursday.

Massey Energy Chairman Don Blankenship and environmentalist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will be on hand to discuss the coal industry and take questions from the audience.

Blankenship has been a vocal critic of both U.S. trade policy and climate-change legislation.

Kennedy, the son of the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy, is president of Waterkeeper Alliance and chief prosecuting attorney for the Hudson Riverkeeper. He also serves as a senior attorney for the National Resources Defense Council.

According to a news release, UC President Ed Welch sees the forum as an opportunity for the University of Charleston to help flesh out the arguments and issues surrounding the debate over the role of coal in America's energy future.

President Ed Welch will be the moderator of the forum and he says the format will be similar to that of a presidential debate.

"We are thrilled to be able to bring together two individuals who are deeply involved in this issue on the national stage," Welch said. "The future direction of U.S. energy policy is a vital concern to the people of West Virgina, many of whom rely on the coal industry for their livelihood. It is in everyone's best interest to promote this discussion."

The coal forum is set for January 21 at 6:30 p.m. at the University of Charleston. The forum will take place in Geary Auditorium, but another 2,000 seats will be open to the public for a live remote broadcast in the Eddie King Gymnasium.

Each side of the debate will get 100 tickets to hand out. There will also be some tickets available for the university's students and faculty.

Its about time Mr. Blankenship showed his face with all of this mess, His oompany is the one in question with the holding of these permits. He will say safety is the number one agenda to the coal companies, but he will not admit that his company is the one who is damaging the communities! Do not get me wrong, i stand beside the miners, but not the company, they dive through loopholes to get the coal faster, no matter what happens, and treats the workers like crap, and fires them over small things, to replace them with red hats, less money comming out of their pockets. Sad!
