JACKSON COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The United Steelworkers of America is challenging proposed cuts to health care benefits for workers who have retired from Century Aluminum in Jackson County.
The USW held a meeting Thursday at Ravenswood High School to discuss the matter.
Union leaders explained how they plan to challenge the proposed reductions and elimination of health benefits.
In October, Century Aluminum sent letters to retirees eligible for Medicare, stating the company would terminate their health benefits on January 1st.
Retirees younger than 65 will also be required to pay new monthly premiums, make higher co-payments for medical care and have lifetime limits on their medical benefits.
Union leaders say the proposed cuts are illegal.

My husband is not a retiree from Century Aluminum but is one of the 600 workers out of a job because of the plants closing last February. I have a grandfather that is close to 80 years old that was one of the first 50 people hired at that plant. He put many, many, many, long and hard years at that plant and helped them make the profits that they did. And then, when him and my grandmother need it the most, they cancel their insurance. And then Century tried to put the blame on the fact that they had to do that if there were ever going to be any hopes of opening the Ravenswood plant back up. Come on folks, I can't see this ever happening, this was just a good reason to give all of those retirees with the hopes that they would buy it. Sad, sad, sad, situation.
Just another prime example of why we are in such an economic crisis. I hope these employees win this battle, but I have yet to see any of these greedy Big Businesses stopped.
Government says they want health care for all then they let companies screw the people that gave sweat, blood and their whole lives to the stock holders. These people dont get supported by the government because they made one big mistake....they worked.
