HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The city of Huntington is trying to curb crime in downtown bars after the latest deadly shooting in a 4th Avenue nightclub.

Thursday night city council members met to discuss the situation.

Huntington Police Chief Skip Holbrook told city leaders overcrowded bars are the root of many problems recently seen downtown.

“I suggest occupancy is the single most important factor causing the problems,” Chief Holbrook said.

Terrance Palmer just opened Cabana Island Party on 4th Avenue and agrees something needs to be done.

“I think a lot of owners get selfish and start letting anybody in,” Palmer said.

The Public Safety Committee tossed around a few different ideas to try and find a solution.

“We may limit the number of bars, stagger closing times,” said Councilman Mark Bates.

Chief Holbrook says limiting the number of customers and checking suspicious characters is also key.

“The main entrance and exits should be manned with magnetometers,” the Chief said.

Longtime bar owner Herb Stanley says the bar problem should fall in the state's lap.

“Why isn’t the ABCC here, this should be on the state,” Stanley said.

The committee is also looking into fining bartenders who serve alcohol to people already intoxicated and possibly changing closing time from 3:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. for new bars.

Nothing was passed at Thursday's meeting, but the public safety committee will meet again in a few weeks to discuss the next step.

It wasn't as bad when HPD was allowed to work at the entrance of some of this places...To our local law enforcement, "Thank you for trying to make this a safe area."

I would just like to say I have noticed the increased prescence in the city by HPD and the WV State Police, THANK YOU! TO the NAACP who is concerned about racial profiling, here is a amazing idea, leave us your number and the next time there is a emergency in Huntington we will call you! Lets see you stand in the line of fire like these men and women do and see if it becomes a racial game! To those concerned about the bars, here is a a terrific idea: GET A JOB, you will not have so much time to be concerned with where your going to get your next drink on! Seriously people!
