UPDATE @ 4:00pm
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- According to a spokesperson, Sen. Robert C. Byrd also enjoyed lunch in Shepherdstown with his family friends and staff.
While he was there he received phone calls from President Barack Obama and Vicki Kennedy, wife of the late Senator Ted Kennedy. The Kennedy family also had a dozen red roses waiting for him at the restaurant.
ORIGINAL STORY
CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. (AP) -- Sen. Robert C. Byrd is spending his 92nd birthday in West Virginia, at a groundbreaking for a new section of highway.
Byrd planned to be in Charles Town on Friday to kick off construction of another section of the new W.Va. Route 9. The road will run from the east bank of the Shenandoah River to the Virginia state line.
Earlier this week, after spending nearly 57 years in Washington, D.C., Byrd officially became the longest-serving member of Congress in history.
He says he's loved every minute of it, and his only regret is that late wife Erma is not here to celebrate with him.
Building roads has been a key part of Byrd's work.
To date, his staff says, he has secured $156 million to help build the 15-mile, $350 million section of Route 9.

The only good thing about this is at 92 he can't be expected to stick around much longer . . .
I'll bet him, his appointed advisors and all his caretakers were all staying here in a hotel at the expense of the taxpayers. Go back home to Va and stay you old dirty byrd.
Byrd is the biggest bag of wind this state has to offer. What good has he done for this state... NOTHING!! We are one of the fatest, poorest, and smokiest states in the U.S. This man is a Joke!!
