PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WSAZ) -- People convicted of shoplifting in Pike County, Kentucky, are receiving a unique sentence -- something one judge calls humiliation.
The shoplifters are sentenced to standing outside the courthouse and holding a sign explaining what they did, in addition to jail time and fines.
Pike County District Judge Kelsey Friend says ever since he started adding the public signs to shoplifters' sentences, theft has dropped in the county.
A woman sitting outside the Pike County Courthouse did not want to talk, but her sign says plenty.
"I was convicted of shoplifting from K-Mart. I got 30 days in jail and fined 450 dollars. I'm Sorry!" the sign stated.
"When we let her do her sign, she's all tears, but she wasn't all tears when she stole from our stores," Judge Friend said.
He says those sentenced to the signs hardly ever get arrested again.
"The ridicule basically from the people seeing them, identifying themselves as a thief it does something to them. I don't know what. I just know it works, and when you have something that works, you want to continue that practice," Judge Friend said.
Only first time offenders are sentenced to signs. If they do not hold the sign outside, they must pay 300 dollars more in fines.

Here's your sign "stupid"! Obama is at least doing something and that is alot more than bush/cheney did.Cheney should be in prison for haliburton,no wonder he is all for war. Sicko.
Obama has a sign "The United States is sorry for being the power house we are, we are sorry for all the times we have left our shores to come and defend your country and then spend billions rebuilding it" "we are currently trying to do away with all the values that the US was founded on like Christianity, capitalism and our constitution and become a liberal socialist so far left from center we make Iran look like its having a tea party with Mr. Rogers in his neighbor hood.
Great ideal, but make them stand outside the store where they commited the crime. Eight hours outside a Walmart with a sign would deterr crime alot. I've always said that public hummiliation is a great crime stopper, works better than jail time.
