A fun evening out on the river turned tragic for one family. Now, emergency crews, family and friends are searching the Ohio River for the father of two young children.
It happened along the shore line of the Ohio on the Kentucky side near the Black Oak community, which is near Vanceburg. Family members say the boat flipped because of a wave created by a barge. That was around 7:30p.m. on Saturday evening, but on Sunday it was a much different scene.
So far, the search has brought in divers, helicopters and depth finders, but it's the volunteers combing the shoreline waiting for any word that really shows the depth of the search and rescue.
“We just need help finding him because his kids are asking,” said Chasity McGowan.
Chasity McGowan has been combing the shoreline and Ohio River for her little brother, Danny Edington, Jr., who was in a boating accident over the weekend.
“My brother was hanging onto the boat yelling to them to get the kids and he went under,” said McGowan. “They haven't seen him since.”
Danny was the only one on the boat without a life jacket on. and is 25-years-old.
“It could have been a lot worse,” said Phil Dummit, Danny’s father-in-law. “It is bad enough, but it could have been worse.” “Danny was a good swimmer and a strong boy, but had he had a life jacket on, he probably never would have gone down.”
Now, in the murky Ohio River, emergency responders are hoping to find the father of two and the friend of so many.
Crews will return to the river on Monday morning to resume their search. We are told special search dogs will be brought in to try to find Edington, and of course, family members will also be out along the river just like they've been since the victim went missing.
