UPDATE from 11pm Monday
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- There has been a lot of talk since former Marshall University head coach Mark Snyder resigned over the weekend, and the university still hasn't picked a replacement.
Aside from all the people talking, we all know money talks, and it looks like Marshall will have to up the ante to get what they want.
Marshall ranks at the bottom with coach payout -- at least in Conference USA. And a lot of that has to do with donations.
The following are approximate figures from "The Orlando Sentinel."
1. June Jones SMU $2 million
2. Skip Holtz ECU $1.16 million
3. Gregory O'Leary UCF $1.15 million
7. Larry Fedora Southern Mississippi $800 thousand
10. Mark Snyder $500 thousand
Marshall Athletic Director Mike Hamrick told WSAZ.com during a news conference that there will be a salary increase for the position. Donations also have been down in the past couple years the Big Green Club supports scholarships. That could go up, however, with a new coach on board.
While there's no word yet on who has shown interest in replacing Snyder, we do know many people have asked to be considered.
ORIGINAL STORY
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Mark Snyder resigned Sunday as head football coach at Marshall University.
Snyder compiled a 22-37 record (.373 winning percentage) over his five year tenure with Marshall.
The Thundering Herd is 6-6 in 2009, earning conditional bowl eligibility after a win against SMU. In their season finale, Marshall lost 52-21 at UTEP.
Marshall hired Snyder in April 2005 to succeed Bob Pruett, the same season the school made the move from the MAC to Conference USA. After a 4-7 season in 2005, the university resigned Snyder through 2013.
Snyder's 22 wins ties him for 7th on Marshall's wins list.
He is the 8th FBS football coach to lose his job in 2009 (Al Groh, Virginia; J.D. Brookhart, Akron; Steve Kragthorpe, Louisville; Tommy West, Memphis; Dick Tomey, San Jose State; Mike Sanford - UNLV; David Elson, Western Kentucky).
Snyder's Record Through the Years:
2005: 4-7 (3-5)
2006: 5-7 (4-4)
2007: 3-9 (3-5)
2008: 4-8 (3-5)
2009: 6-6 (4-4)
Marshall University News Release:
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University Head Football Coach Mark Snyder announced his intention to resign Sunday.
"I met with Mike Hamrick (Director of Athletics) extensively today and we discussed our football program. I feel that it was in the best interest of our program for me to announce my intent to resign my position," Snyder said. "It has been an honor to be the coach here and I will always be appreciative of the opportunity my university gave me.
"I want to thank all of the fans for their support and all of my players and assistant coaches for their hard work and dedication. I wish the program nothing but the best."
Snyder, a 1988 Marshall graduate, has served as head coach for the past five seasons at his alma-mater and has a career record of 21-37.
"I want to thank Mark for his five years of service to Marshall University," Hamrick said. "He is a Marshall guy and we wish him the best in his future endeavors."
Hamrick confirmed that a search for a new head coach will begin immediately and to protect the integrity of the search he will not comment on any aspect of it during the process.

I DON'T CARE WHO WE ARE TALKING ABOUT: THE MARSHALL THUNDERING HERD, WV MOUNTAINEERS OR THE OHIO STATE BUCKEYES. ANY TEAM WITH A 6-6 RECORD DOES NOT DESERVE BOWL CONSIDERATION. AND SPEAKING OF BOB PRUITT: YOU WILL NEVER CONVINCE ME HE DIDN'T SEE C-USA COMING. HE KNEW IT WOULD BE A TOUGH ROAD TO THREAD. THE MARSHALL THUNDERING HERD FOOTBALL TEAM IS, AT BEST, A DECENT MAC CONFERENCE TEAM. IF THE LOCAL FAN BASE ENJOYS WATCHING THE HERD BEAT UP ON LOWLY OPPENENTS FROM THE MAC EACH WEEK THEN SO BE IT. THAT'S ABOUT ALL THEY CAN DO!!!
TOO all WVU FANS that are Bashing with your posting's.Why don't all of you keep your mouth's shut and go burn a couch.MY kids go to wvu for education NOT sports.Morganhole is one of the WORST towns that I am forced to visit 2/3 times a month. It is like a RAT HOLE on the side of a Mountain.I ask most people where would you like to wake up every morning @ about 75% say Huntington.I bet all of the other Big East Schools LAUGH with distress when they have to got to M-Town Mo Town doesn't have a airport big enough for the larger teams with larger Jets to land @ Motown,it's pittsburgh or bust.Morgantown WV What a JOKEAnd by the your so called mall is a TOTAL Joke, been there done that. All in ALL M town is nothing but a school carved out of a rock. It's no wonder what people think of this He## Whole of a place, you internet bashers amaze us at your postings.MU will take care of themselves hopefully this time they learned alot of lessons!By the way what happened to Rich Rod @ the Cheerleader case?
Marshall made a HUGE mistake leaving the MAC Conference. The C-USA is so boring to the local fan base. In the MAC students, fans and Alumni could jump in vehicles and drive to most of the away games with teams we are all familuar with, Ohio U, Miami of Ohio, Kent State, Bowling Green and Ball State... There are not too many students, and fans who can afford plane tickets and go to out of town games. Did you see the stands @ UTEP? Hardley any green in those stands. Mark Snyder was a class act and an outstanding Marshall man. He did not win enough games so he had to be replaced, it happens. Snyder as well as Marshall will bounce back because of who they are, They Are Marshall. Good luck to Both.
