CABELL COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Sometimes in the weeks after the city pool has been drained and the pumpkins are being prepped for harvest, Betty Clay starts the annual walk to her Christmas closet and starts unpacking.
Clay has her work cut out for her. She has 18 trees inside her home.
"I was born on Christmas, and I started collected balls when I was 6 years old," she said.
That was more than 65 years ago and the collection just gets larger.
All the trees have memories, but the one that's extra special is the gold iron tree that sits in the living room. It's so special it sits there all year long. That tree is the last tree her husband gave her before his death in 2002.
"The gold tree in my living room is the last tree my husband brought me before he passed away," she said. "When I put it up he said, 'Betty, every time I go somewhere, buy a bulb and hang it on that tree.' So I do."
Her home may rival Santa's when it comes to Christmas spirit, but Clay wants to remind people "things" are not important.
"I think a home is what you make of it," she said. "How comfortable you make your children and family. You teach them love and kindness.
I think that's what a home is."

I just checked the comments to see if there were any more posted and I am so glad to see that so many people saw the positive in this story. Christmas is about love and Jesus's birthday - that is the true celebration and I am glad to see that Mrs. Clay celebrates Jesus's birthday with such style along with her birthday. It looks like the good one out on the comments for this one and I hope that all of you know the true meaning of Christmas and celebrate it for all of the right reasons. Thank you Mrs. Clay and happy birthday to you! We so enjoy your house at Christmas.
I would like to point out that the people that made the negative comments must be very unhappy or bitter. This was such a positive, moving story and it saddens me that we live in a society that can't feel good about someone else's happiness. Merry Christmas and Happy Birthday, Mrs. Clay---maybe you will get a new tree from your wonderful grandchildren!
THANK YOU Betty for sharing such a great story with us! I have always enjoyed driving by your home during the holiday season and now my daughter gets equally excited to see all the lights. I wish you many more years of decorating and may your collection keep growing. I admire your Holiday Spirit that so many have seem to forgot!!
