FORT MYERS, Fl. (WBBH, WSAZ) -- An Ashland, Kentucky native and father-to-be was killed while on his way to witness the birth of his daughter.
WBBH in Fort Myers, Florida reports that Steve Dyer was killed when his motorcycle slammed into the back of a parked truck Wednesday. The crash happened near the Sanibel Toll Plaza.
Dyer's friend Bryon Councell says Steve was a determined worker, a dependable friend, and an experienced motorcycle rider. However, over the last few months, the thing that most defined him was the upcoming birth of his first child.
But this week, scary news came. Dyer's wife Tabitha began having contractions three months early. Dyer had spent the last several days by his wife's side at Healthpark Hospital, where she had gone into premature labor. Tabitha was about to have a C-section, but Steve decided to run home and get some clothes. He was rushing back to the hospital when the fatal accident happened.
"My last words to him were, Steve, you're going to make a really good father. That was the last thing I said to him," Councell said.
But Dyer would never get that chance. He died at the same hospital he was rushing to get to, just a few hours short of the start of his little girl's life. Councell said the little girl's name is Stevie Ann, for her father.
Stevie Ann is in the ICU, and is expected to be there for the next 10 to 12 weeks. Mom Tabitha is healthy, but tells WBBH she is devastated.
Family and friends say the stress of the week is what caused the crash, saying Dyer was never careless on his bike.
Dyer's family tells WSAZ.com that his body will be flown back to Ashland for a funeral. However, a date has not been set.

My heart goes out to all who know this young man. I remember when he was born and kept up through his mother and grandmother with his accomplishments in life. They were very proud of him as well as the Dyer family. I was sad to see that none of his mother's family, uncles, aunts not even his own grandmother was named in his obit. That side of the family has also suffered a great loss as well. Please be kind to one another as Steve would have wanted everyone to be.
i work with his mother-in-law and my thoughts and prayers are with her , the new grand child and her daughter. we are all praying for all of you. these are exceptionally great people and we love you all.
Wow, what a touching story. I'm so sorry for this family!! I usually don't get caught up in these stories but this one touches my heart, because I am a father who loves his children unconditionally and will give my life to benefit them.. I too lost my father when I was a young kid, and I can only hope this little girl can grow up knowing how much her daddy loved her and that she is not alone...
