PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (AP) -- An audit has found that nearly $8,000 in drug forfeiture money is missing from the Wood County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff Jeff Sandy says the West Virginia State Police and detectives from the Parkersburg and Vienna police departments are investigating the missing money.

A report by the West Virginia Auditor's Office says the money was kept in an evidence room. Instead of depositing the money into a bank account, the Sheriff's office used it as a petty cash fund.

According to the report, the last entry in a log book of the fund's activity was on Jan. 6, 2005.

Sandy has set up a checking account for forfeiture funds in response to the findings.

There are bigger questions here than just missing money. Evidence rooms are supposed to preserve the chain of custody. Any lawyer representing a defendant in Wood County could move for evidence stored in this room/facility to be dismissed.

Hey Bluebird, doesn't matter what it was used for,if its not accounted for, it's illegal. That is why we have bookkeepers- they keep record of all these things. DUH!!!!!! By the way, do you work for the sheriff's department?
