FLOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Officials say a new highway in Floyd County could boost the economy and help those living nearby.

State and local officials cut the ribbon Monday on the first section of the Kentucky 680 extension, nicknamed the "Minnie to Harold connector."

The plan for the connector began decades ago.

Now, the first section is complete and officials say this is the beginning of a new highway that will cut travel time and open up room for new businesses.

Elisha Branham and his family live near the new road in Harold. He gave part of his land for highway department to build the road.

"It was well worth it, so much," said Branham.

Once the entire Highway 680 extension is complete, it will connect Minnie to Harold. Officials say it could cut travel time up to an hour to some places for those people living in Mud Creek and Left Beaver.

No construction date is set yet for the other two sections to finish the Minnie to Harold connector, but it is in the state's six year highway plan.
