CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Kanawha County is ready to kick off a new initiative to fight childhood obesity.

During a news conference Tuesday, the Kanawha Coalition for Community Health Improvement announced a new program called KEYS 4 HealthyKids.

The organization just received a $360,000 grant from the Robert Wood Foundation.

The money will help improve opportunities for physical activity and access to affordable, healthy foods for children and families in Kanawha County.

According to a news release, 47 percent of Kanawha County's predominately low-income children are considered overweight or obese.

Experts say these children not only face health issues such as higher rates of type 2 diabetes and heart disease, but they also incur higher medical costs and are generally less productive in school.

Kanawha County is one of only 41 communities, nationwide, selected to receive funding for this initiative.
