UPDATE from 6pm
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Workers affected by the layoffs at Special Metals reacted to the news in various ways Friday.

"I'm going to look at taking a job in advertising," laid off worker Anthony Newbey said. "That's what I have my degree in, and I'm looking at the layoff as a good thing."

Newbey and 86 other junior employees at Special Metals are off the job come Monday.

"I've only worked here two years," Newbey said. "I'll go back into what I have my degree in."

Sixty-six employees at the Huntington plant and 19 workers in Burnaugh, Ky., are being laid off, company spokesman Dwight Weber says.

"The layoffs are a result of weak general industrial markets," Weber says. "We hope there will be a change in the economy so those laid off could come back some day."

Weber says the local plants serve oil and gas, chemical processing and pollution control -- three markets said to be hit by a bad economy.

Melanie Sias has worked at Special Metals for six years. She's not on the lay off list, but she's still concerned.

"If I lose this job, it will really hurt me," she said. "I'm putting my kids through college. If I lose my job, I don't know what I'm going to do."

Sias says fewer employees means more work and overtime for those still at the plant.

There is a chance those who are laid off can eventually come back to work, depending on economic conditions during the next few months.

ORIGINAL STORY
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- More than 80 people will soon be laid off at Special Metals.

Union President of Local 40, Greg Kingery said workers got the news Thursday.

Kingery says 66 workers will be laid off at the Huntington plant and 19 will be jobless at the plant in Burnaugh, Kentucky.

Kingery cited economic conditions for the layoffs.

I knew that also, but the thing is that the men who work at SM have been brain washed since the early 80's by scared tactics when they brought in Petro in and his team from NY. I know you know what I am talking about? The men at S.M. have been treated like children and treated like they don't have a brain until they started to believe it! It is so sad. Now most of those men are getting older and are scared to lose their jobs and SM knows it.Remember the time of the contract before when they went on strike and they were out for a long time? We ate better than we had before:) But inorder for those men there stand up and be counted for "really" things won't change! The company has been working to get rid of the union for years, if you want to call what SM has a real union? Not in my book is there a real union.Back in my day,if they had a question about you over something concerning your job, your union rep. was there and was fighting for you! Not today.Today he will tell you not to speak!

PCC is Precision Castparts Corp. They OWN Special Metals. They are in Portland, Ore. Stock this last yr. has gone from $47.71 to $118.62 closed yesterday at $107.50. How is this company making this kind of money and the Huntington plant is in such bad shape?

We lost another worker due to cut-backs. our mobile Crane operator in maintance got bumped out of maintance. No big deal huh? Well look at this, He had over 30 years in the plant and was always good and safe with what he did. He got paid step 8. Now the mobile Crane operator will get paid step 21 because it will be maintance trads person in the crane. Kinda makes no sense does it??? they need to think before they act things out sometimes. So instead of him going back to an off shift, he is going HOME!! I don't blame him. We will miss you J.R.
