WASHINGTON (AP) -- Toyota Motor Corp. is telling dealers that they should get parts to fix sticky gas pedals later this week. But the 4.2 million customers affected by a large recall may have to wait a while for repairs.
Toyota tells dealers in an e-mail sent early Monday that they will get shims to repair springs in the gas pedal systems that have been weakened. But repairs will have to wait until technicians are trained.
The e-mail was obtained by The Associated Press. The repair plan will be officially announced later Monday.
Toyota has recalled 4.2 million cars and trucks worldwide because gas pedal systems may stick. The company says the problem is rare.
Government regulators told Toyota last week that they were satisfied with the repair plan.
ORIGINAL STORY
NEW YORK (AP) - Toyota is recalling 2.3 million U.S. vehicles to correct sticking accelerator pedals, the latest in a string of quality problems that have bedeviled the Japanese automaker.
The recall includes the 2009-2010 RAV4, the 2009-2010 Corolla, the 2009-2010 Matrix, the 2005-2010 Avalon, the 2007-2010 Camry, the 2010 Highlander, the 2007-2010 Tundra and the 2008-2010 Sequioia.
Toyota Motor Corp. spokesman Brian Lyons says the recall is due to the vehicles' pedal mechanism becoming worn and, in some cases, stuck.
The recall comes just months after Toyota issued a larger 4.2 million-vehicle recall because of pedals getting stuck due to insecure floor mats.

I've driven Toyotas for almost 18 years. I currently own an 01 Toyota Tacoma that I bought brand new in St. Albans. It is my opinion that Toyota quality has "fallen off" over the past 10 years. I bought a brand new Matrix in 2004 from Advantage (I would not recommend this dealer!! Hard to work with after the sale!!). The car was plagued with several problems; leaky sunroof, bent rims, the center storage compartment falling open, poor workmanship in general. In contrast, I never had a single issue with the other 5 Toyotas I owned prior to 2004. Obviously, these problems are not as serious as what is occuring today but indicates a slide in the overall quality of the brand. As my truck approaches the end of its useful life, I'm unsure what brand I will replace it with. I can't say for certain that it won't be a Toyota but I am considering Ford and Chevy this time around; something I had not done in 10 years.
Well we own 2 toyota vehicles and we have 2 small children! I wouldn't trust any other car for our family! They are stepping up and doing the right thing! My sister had a ford car that caught fire while driving on the interstate with me in the car! I guess since she didn't go on the news about it it wasn't important! Things happen... Get over it! When GOD calls you to heaven it isn't going to matter if you are in a Toyota, Ford or bicycle!
I wonder if the woman that rammed into the Saint Albans insurance agency office a few months back was driving one of these Toyotas?
