CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- West Virginia Senator Robert C. Byrd sent a special recorded message to Kanawha County leaders Thursday, along with a delivery of digital radios for emergency communication.

A grant from Senator Byrd helped pay for almost 750 digital radios.

They'll be given to police, firefighters and EMS workers. The analog radios they use now only let them talk to each other within a mile.

The new radios will let them communicate across the city, county, even the state with a sophisticated network of towers.

The radios should all be distributed in the next couple of months.

In Byrd's message, he says "Big Daddy" was glad to help his fellow West Virginians stay safe.

Senator Byrd, You are truly a blessing to the state of West Virginia. I love you and admire your service to the West Virginia people. You are the only public official that stands with the quote " by the people for the people". I love you and wish you many more years...
