GRAYSON, Ky. (WSAZ) -- We have a first look at the quake zone in Haiti through local eyes.

A young woman set out to Haiti before the earthquake to change lives and help those in need. She's now returned from a much different mission herself, forever changed concerned by people in need now more than ever.

"Even though it was the scariest thing I'd ever been through, we saw so many miracles and the hand of God," Nicholas said.

Starting with Heather’s location -- the 21-year-old college student at Kentucky Christian University was enjoying her first mission. The 10-day trip to Haiti was supposed to be full of ministering to women and children through gifts and gatherings. She also met a child she had been sponsoring through Lifeline Christian Mission.

Then came the earthquake.

"I was actually in that room when the quake happened," Heather said. "I was on the second floor on the top bunk. We were talking and relaxing and heard a noise that sounded like a jackhammer. Then, shaking started."

Nicholas and her fellow missionaries in the dorm were spared because the building was one of the few in the area built by Americans with a rock solid foundation. Their Haitian neighbors weren't so lucky. The missionary compound became a refuge for the hundreds in the area who lost their homes and loved ones.

"You don't know how lacking you are in faith until you don't know where your next drink of water is going to come from or where electricity is coming from or whether you’re going to make it through the night safely," Nicholas said.

After the quake, Nicholas was able to locate her sponsor child and her mother. They were fine, but they lost their home and the father was missing.

"She was saying she was going to pray for me and I said I should be praying for you," Nicholas said. "I have a home to go to and you lost yours."

That trip home was a bumpy one. Since all commercial flights were canceled, they took a military flight out.

"Some had to sit on the floor and just strap in, but that was OK because we were happy to be going home,” Nicholas said.

"At the airport, my dad was holding a banner that said, 'Welcome Home Heather.' Someone asked him if he was expecting a soldier, but that’s kind of what it was like."

Heather was based in Grand Goave -- about 50 miles west of Port-au-Prince. She said she would definitely go on another mission trip.
