CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Some folks traded in their snow suits for swim suits Saturday to help out the Special Olympics.
Dozens of people signed up to take the polar plunge at Appalachian Power Park. They stripped down to their swimming gear and jumped into a swimming pool.
Mark Clemens was the first to take the frigid dip Saturday, and that's because he raised more than $30,000. Clemens says it were his coworkers at Massey Energy that helped him raise the money and in just a week.
It was only fitting that Clemens take the plunge in a miner's hat and reflective suspenders.
"As soon as I jumped in that water and realizing we raised $30,000 I was never cold the whole time," Clemens said.
Last year, the event brought in more than $40,000. The Special Olympics anticipates that the total will be much higher this year. John Corbett, Special Olympics Director, says every penny will go towards helping their athletes accomplish their goals.
"They want to play sports, they want to be recognized and feel that they belong to something," Corbett said.
All the money raised will go towards the Special Olympics games held in June.

I just have to say my co-worker and I participated it in this year and had a blast. We will be back next year and we are bringing our friends with us. Yes it was very cold but it is all for a good cause.. Hope to see everyone out there next year....... Peace
I have volunteered for Special Olympics, WV for the past 8 years. This is the 6th year the Polar Plunge has taken place, the 4th year in Charleston. The polar plunge is an event to raise money for Special Olympics, WV. All proceeds go to support Special Olympic athletes in WV which provides year round sports training and athletic competitions to thousands of WV children and adults with developmental disabilities. To all those who have plunged or will be plunging next year and to all those who volunteer or support Special Olympics in some way thank you so much. For those of you who had negative things to say about the event, you are entitled to your opinion. I just hope in the future you try to educate yourself in what you are speaking of. Obviously with some of the negative and radiculous comments noted below you had no idea.
TO Shirley n Josh, these good folks may have taken the plunge for you, what event do you two participate in this year? To you "plungers" thanks and my hats off to all of you for a very worthwhile cause.
