CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Malquan Brown and his family are regulars at the Abundant Life Ministries on Charleston's East End. Sunday, the service was dedicated to the 15-year-old.

The reason for the special service stems back to an incident that happened on January 16th. Malquan was in Jackson County to attend a birthday party. He was hanging out with a group of teens that decided to try to walk across a nearby frozen creek. Malquan and two girls got halfway out when the ice cracked and the girls fell into the water.

One of the girls was able to crawl back onto the ice, but 13-year-old Bridget Camp was in deeper water and was struggling to stay afloat.

"I was wondering how I was going to get out and if I was going to get out and what was going to happen if I didn't get out," Bridget said.

Five other teens watched the struggle from the shore, even videoing the fall with a camera phone. Some of them were laughing, thinking that Bridget and her friend were just playing around.

Malquan couldn't just watch, he jumped in after Bridget.

"I was scared," said Malquan. "I was thinking like what if I die too?"

When Malquan pulled her from the water Bridget says she was in shock and that it took her a few minutes to calm down. After she warmed up, she thanked Malquan and gave him a hug.

Bridget's family was at the service Sunday. They got a chance to thank him for helping her.

"For him to put his own life on the line for my daughter, most adults wouldn't do that, let alone a 15-year-old kid," said Tanner. " If he ever needs anything I'll be there for him, even if I'm 90, that's just how I feel. I can't do enough for him.

Malquan has received honors from his church, Charleston City Council, Governor Joe Manchin and Shelly Moore Capito.
