CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Former Supreme Court Justice Elliott "Spike" Maynard has filed candidacy papers to run for the U.S. House.
Maynard will now face incumbent Nick Rahall (D) in the 3rd district.
"I am running for Congress to save coal jobs and jobs that depend on coal," Maynard said. "West Virginians deserve a congressman who will fight to end this war on coal instead of standing by idly as thousands of local jobs are threatened."
Maynard joined the West Virginia's GOP a year after Democratic voters rejected his bid for State Supreme Court.
"I didn't leave the Democratic Party - the Democratic Party left me," Maynard stated in a news release. "We should be creating jobs, not killing them. We should be producing energy, not reducing energy."
Maynard won a seat on the bench in 1996, but lost the 2008 primary. Many blamed his loss on the conflict of interest scandal involving photos of him and Massey CEO Don Blankenship. The court had been dealing with several cases involving Massey Energy at the time.
WSAZ.com has contacted Rep. Rahall for a statement regarding Maynard's intent to run, but the call was not returned before this article was published.
In the primary election, Bruce Barilla will run against Rep. Rahall. Maynard will face three other republicans including Lee Bias of Cabell County, Marty Gearheart of Mercer County and also from Cabell County, Conrad G. Lucas II.

Sweep all the incumbents out. Time for real change. 2012 sweep out cry baby Obama.
I just read Obama is meeting with all energy states governors to push "clean coal". Keep in mind the other side of Obama's mouth said "there is no clean coal." If you plan on living in WV in the future you better pray that our Governor stands up to the goose steppers in Washington or West Virginia will be the first state that is a National Park.
Will Don Blankinship now Buy a U.S House seat? For Spike.
