PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Gov. Ted Strickland says when it comes to jobs, what's good for the entire Buckeye State is also good for southern Ohio.
Strickland is on the road after his State of the State speech last week and visited Portsmouth on Monday.
He came to Shawnee State University to talk about advanced energy and job creation. After university president Rita Rice Morris outlined the governor's high tech classroom tour, WSAZ.com's Randy Yohe asked Strickland why southern Ohio wasn't specifically mentioned in his State of the State speech.
"It's true the train won't run through Portsmouth, but I'm responsible for eleven and a half million people," he said.
Strickland's demonstration in the plastics program lab was no stretch -- plastics is Ohio's largest industry. It generates $49 billion a year. Strickland says without extending funds for the High Tech Third
Frontier grant program, Ohio will not be competitive with other areas.
"The program created thousands of jobs and made millions for the private sector," he said.
Yohe asked Strickland what he wanted to tell the struggling Southern Ohio Workforce Development Center folks who are finished with retraining and still jobless.
"We've extended unemployment benefits and allowed people to go to school," Strickland said.
Strickland also said he wants to fast track transportation projects. He said the Portsmouth project was on track, but he didn't mention anything about the Chesapeake project.
Yohe also asked Strickland about the failed Russian steel mill and the nearly 1,000 jobs lost. He says there will be a facility on that property. He did not say, though, how or when or who might come to that property in Franklin Furnace.

Ted Figgins of Lancaster Machining in Lancaster Ohio said I hope this helps get Ohio moving bacause I been here for 23 years and If I don't get some machining work in here fast I may not be able to continue.
Thanks Randy for the great questions you asked Gov. Strickland. The responses clearly indicated that Mr. Strickland is clueless. In one breath he is boasting job creation ("Jobs, Jobs, Jobs!") and the next bragging about eliminating over 5,000 State of Ohio employee's jobs. Is Ohio really on the right track? I guess it depends on if you are into trains. Choo Choo Mr. Strickland.
Maybe southern Ohio, Boyd county and Cabell county should all form our own state we could call ourselves "The land the capitols forgot".
