HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Look around the construction site at 1919 Artisan Ave. in Huntington, and you'll see Ashley Hughes. She's the only girl in a sea of teenagers building a home for Habitat for Humanity.

"I'm better than what I thought I would be," Ashley says. "I didn't think I could do none of this."

Cabell County Career Technology Students are building the house from start to finish. It's homework with a real-life purpose. Richard Hood's a junior.

"It's something hands on," he says. "It's something you can actually do and see we're helping somebody out, which makes it even more worthwhile."

Habitat's local director David Michael says the partnership is a perfect fit.

"Our mantra or motto is to provide a hand up not a hand out," he says. "These students are continuing that same effort we're doing by working on this house."

It is the 71st Habitat home built in Huntington.

The students are learning about construction, heating and cooling systems, and electricity. There are roughly 40 students and four faculty members working on the project. Wes Williams is the career tech's student of the month.

"Now that I'm in vo-tech I'm getting good grades, I'm making the honor role, and I love building this house," he says.

I think this is a great idea! I hope it catches on in more parts of the state. These students will have this experience to put on their resumes. Most jobs want experienced workers and this should help along with their diploma. I'm sure it makes them feel pretty good about themselves too!

I'm in the service industry, I've been in a lot of the houses in Huntington, lee is correct, most of them are trashed, not clean, and pretty much give you the impression a drug house does. It kind of makes you wonder who these people scam to get these houses. God Bless the people who build these, their heart is in the right place.

go back and look at that house in a year. like most other habitat houses in will be in disrepair. a prime example is the one here in barboursviile.neighbors have complained but nothing is done.some people don't deserve help.
