UPDATE @ 9:05 p.m. Saturday
SOUTH CHARLESTON W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Voters overwhelmingly said yes to their annual levy in South Charleston.

The city's mayor says 672 people voted yes and 19 voted against it.

This levy makes up more than a million dollars of the city's budget, going for things like police and fire protection, library services and the public works department.

And in Hurricane, voters also said yes to their levy for the next five years.

241 voted for, and 138 voted against.

The city's mayor says that's a pretty narrow margin, because the levy needed at least 60 percent to pass, and they only got 63 percent.

This is not a new or additional tax. It has been around since 1947.

To Grannylou... Don't worry I also live in South Charleston.... I just barely heard of it... luckily it was in time to vote... I also asked the same questions.... why didn't we hear or see anything about it...By luck I just happened to see an article on this website about it. I agree with you... they should have had better advertising about it.

Hurricane does a good job taking care of the roads. I'm glad it passed. Keep up the good work.

I live and work in South Charleston and did not know there was a special election today. Have I been in a coma??? I have not seen a sign or anything alerting the citizens to the election. How can an election be legal if the people are not informed?
