August 11, 2007. If you don't know the significance of that date just yet, you will. That's when Kanawha County voters will decide on table games.
On Sunday night, however, a group of churches rallied against the expansion of gambling at Tri-State Racetrack and Gaming Center. It’s a battle that won't end until the votes are cast.
Some folks in Dunbar are placing their bets on God. They held a rally, hoping to stop what's already in Dunbar from expanding. But getting their side out is tough. They're competing against signs supporting the expansion of the gaming center all over town. They are billboards that focus on all the jobs and money the table games will bring.
But for churchgoers, it's not about the money. It’s a message the crowd will take with them to the polls.
Sunday night’s rally was sponsored by the Dunbar Ministerial Association. Kanawha County voters will head to the polls on August 11. So far, two of the four race track counties have approved table games. Only one county has voted against the referendum.
