CHARLESTON, W. Va. (WSAZ) -- The first of four gates have been installed along the West Virginia Turnpike.
It took six days for the first gate to be installed near the Paint Creek exit. There is still a tarp covering the gate because state crews can't re-stripe the area until the roadway is dry.
The Parkways Authority is installing the gates to prevent any massive backups like the one back in December where hundreds of drivers were stranded for nearly 30 hours.
Road crews will be able to open the gates and allow traffic to cross over into the other lanes.
There will be four sets of gates set up between Cheylan and Pax.
Construction on the gates is expected to wrap up by the first week of March.
The authority is also going to widen the shoulders near the gates to allow truck drivers to turn their semis around if the highway is closed. Right now, the truck drivers aren't able to make the turn.
The authority hopes to have that project completed by May.

they can make a U turn and go the other way on the interstate. thats what the gates are for.
and just who is going to open these gates and when? If they could not reach the people who where straned the last time, we are to belive they will be there to open the gates. (REALLY)
DEE - They are gates separating the north and south bound lanes. That way if there is another problem like we had back in December (I think that's when it was) people will be able to get off the turnpike. I personally think this will still not solve the problem and is a waste of money. If something like what happened in December happens again these gates won't help the people stuck between gates. Once crews got to them most of those cars were already snowed in...they couldn't have used a gate if they wanted to. Plus, you would have to shut down both sides of the turnpike in order to use the gates so people can turn around. And once you turn around...how does that help you?? You are on the turnpike to get to a specific destination...and unless you know the back roads through Boone or Fayette County you'll still have no where to go.
