CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- A West Virginia official says three people have died from carbon monoxide poisoning linked to gasoline generators used during a winter storm.
Homeland Security director Jimmy Gianato says the state medical examiner determined the cause of death of all three Tuesday.
Gianato says a 71-year-old man and his 70-year-old wife were found unresponsive in the attached garage of a Monongalia County home Monday. The medical examiner's report says a ventilation hose came loose from a gas generator they were using in the garage.
Gianato says a 68-year-old Jefferson County man found in his garage also was using a generator when he was overcome by fumes Monday.

All I am saying is that people that aren't mechanically gifted run out and buy these things every year when the power goes out.you and I both have a pretty good idea on how to use them, but someone reading a quick story might have a light bulb go off in their heads and get the idea that the way they are going about running their genny isn't safe.It might save wsaz from running another sad story.
Common sense did not kill these people, lack there of possibly played a part. There are tons of warnings for proper usage of these generators. I agree you must stay warm but it is no different than building a fire in the living room without a chimney, fumes will be put off. It is sad that this tragedy has happened but you can stay warm safely.
How many others are going to die because they HAVE to use back up heating in fridged temp's. Many can't pay the enormous electric or gas bills laid on us. I don't know if this was the situation with these elderly people but it happens more then once EVEN with all the warnings. People have to stay warm and MOST do not qualify for any assistance, just the shut off notice from Appalachian power to burn if your lucky enough to have a fireplace.. How horrible for some to think commen sense was the cause of these folks death.
