UPDATE from 6pm
BRADRICK, Ohio (WSAZ) -- No smoke detectors were located upstairs in the home where a 10-year-old boy died in Wednesday morning's fire.

The boy's distraught mother, Rita Fralic, told WSAZ.com's Randy Yohe, "A propane thing caught on fire. My son's in there."

Johnathan Fralic, 10, died in the incident.

Rita Fralic says she and her son Johnathan were the only ones upstairs and inside their Route 3 home when the blaze - starting near the faulty heater - quickly overwhelmed the home. Rita said the heater had caught fire during the night, but she left it on and shouldn't have.

She said she tried to get through the smoke, but couldn't reach Johnathan.

Before firefighters arrived, neighbor Nathan Perry first helped rescue Rita from a blazing balcony. He then tried to rescue Johnathan, but couldn't.

"I went in a bit," Perry said. "The flames were so hot. They pushed me back. I wanted to find him."

There were dry hoses on the ground after firefighters had been battling the fire for 45 minutes, with flames still lapping inside the home. Frustrated firefighters say a combination of freezing icy weather and a lack of available water made for a near overwhelming challenge. They said that the roads were treacherous getting to the scene, there was no fire hydrant along the road and water had to be trucked in.

Yohe asked Rita if she had smoke alarms, and she said not upstairs.

ORIGINAL STORY
BRADRICK, Ohio (WSAZ) – A 10-year-old boy has died in a house fire near Bradrick, Ohio, according to the Lawrence County, Ohio Sheriff.

The house is located in the 400 block of Country Road 3 between Chesapeake and Proctorville.

The fire was reported shortly before 8:30 Wednesday morning.

The boy's mother, Rita Fralic, tells WSAZ.com that her son, Jonathan, was trapped on the second floor. Fralic says there was a propane heater in the area. She also says that heater caught fire last night.

A neighbor, Nathan Perry, says he tried the rescue the boy, but there was to much smoke and fire for him to get into the house.

The mom also had to be rescued from an outside porch.

Wednesday afternoon, The State Fire Marshal's Office say the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

They do confirm the fire originated on the second floor near an auxiliary heating unit. They said that heater was in an area that had the appearances of a kitchen.

They do not know if the heater was fueled by propane, natural gas or kerosene.

This is the 23rd fire death in Ohio this year.
