IRONTON, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Betty Guthrie's not a dumpster diver, but she's diving into a local recycling effort like a gold medal champ.

For more than a year now, she's been recycling old cardboard and newspapers. She's so good at it, people are dumping their recycling on her doorstep.

"If it's suspicious, I can feel, I can tell if there's something in there besides paper," Guthrie says.

The effort has paid off in more ways than one. Guthrie has been honored with the first-ever "Kudos for Caring Recycler of the Year" award. It was given to her to her on Tuesday by the Lawrence-Scioto Solid Waste Management District.

One other way it's paid off has been with cold, hard cash. So far, she's raised more than $875 for the recycling. She's turned around and donated that money to her church's mission programs.

"Oh, it does add up," Guthrie says. "It does add up. If I pass someplace and I see cardboard and I think, 'Oh, I need to stop and get that! ' "

She's the first to admit, once she retired, she was worried about keeping busy. But that's never been a problem.

Recycling, she says, "helps the community, helps with the litter, and it helps with the church."
