Gov. Joe Manchin is seeking a federal disaster declaration for several counties hit hard by December's winter storm.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Gov. Joe Manchin is seeking a federal disaster declaration for several counties hit hard by December's winter storm.

Manchin said Wednesday that he spoke with Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, who assured him that her department has been monitoring West Virginia's winter weather problems.

The Dec. 18 storm severely hampered transportation, left thousands without electricity and heat for several days and caused an estimated $3 million in damage.

Counties included in the declaration request are: Boone, Calhoun, Clay, Fayette, Greenbrier, Kanawha, McDowell, Mingo, Nicholas, Pendleton, Pocahontas, Raleigh, Ritchie, Roane and Wyoming.

Actually,My Family & I were without electricty for 11 days straight.And without phone for 17 days straight.In the above statement,it said,residents were without electricity for a FEW days,pshhtt! YEAH,WE ALL WISH thats how it went.We were miserable.The AEP crew,did NOT do much of a job getting our power turned back on as quickly as they could.They were enjoying the time away from their families & responsibilities at home,enjoying the FREE hotels & going to strip clubs,bars, & what not.Thats a load of crap! FEW DAYS MY BUTT! WV needs to step up! Sincerely,AMBER from BAISDEN,WEST VIRGINIA

the state acks ike this is the first snow they ever seen thi little snow storms is nothing like they was 40 years ago when it knew how to snow and theydidnt ask for the tax payer topay for it

What a bunch of MORONS elected to office. Why don't we just ask the taxpayer for money to send to North and South Dakota, Minnisota, Montana, Maine, New Hampshire, etc. Get the picture Joe? These states get as much as WV every year, yet they don't get disaster aid.
