HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- If you didn't have to go outside in Wednesday's weather, it was a good day to stay huddled up inside where it was warm and cozy.

Not everyone is so lucky, though. The show must go on, as the saying goes.

It's one thing that's inevitable in life -- and when death comes, guys such as Ricky Pinson go to work with no questions and no complaints to help bury the dead.

"It's not that bad," Pinson says. "It’s my job. It’s what I do."

Pinson is employed with the Greater Huntington Park and Recreation District.

The cold weather does present its challenges, though, when digging graves -- starting with breaking frozen ground.

"The hard part is getting past that frozen layer. After that, it gets easier," Pinson says.

Then, several layers of clothing and well-timed breaks make this cold job a safe one.

From the end of life to saving a life, for firefighters, safety is priority one. When fire strikes, firefighters hit the ground running -- or sliding -- doing whatever it takes to save lives and property.

It's a lifesaving mission that's already dangerous, but the stakes go way up when the temperature dips this low.

"When our guys show any signs of hypothermia, we send them in the truck where the heater is running for them to take off their gloves and coats and warm up," says Ed Webb with the Chesapeake Volunteer Fire Department. "They’re not allowed to come back out until they can safely do the job."
