CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- West Virginia's Senate has approved a measure meant to improve safety around underground gas pipelines and well sites, but environmentalists aren't happy with the process.
They had cried foul over a change to the bill before senators unanimously voted to send it to the House of Delegates this week.
The bill adds to rules that govern oil and gas drilling. One provision would require companies to mark whether they've placed underground pipelines in mining areas. A surface miner was killed in 2006 when his bulldozer struck a gas pipeline in Boone County.
Another provision aims to prevent leaks of wastewater holding ponds at well sites. Some environmentalists object to an exception added to that language. Supporters say state regulators agree to that change.

Worked on natural gas lines 12 years. These companies are left to self police. When they can roll the dice on safety or profits it is profit. Usually at the expense or peril of the poor. The less they spend on repairs the more profit.Someone dies it is cheaper to pay than to keep up system.
its not about the envirounment, its about control.they will continue their way of living, warm house, cool house, use mor utilities, burn more gasoline etc, screaming the sky is falling because of us,but dont bother their lifestyle.would someone do some true investigative reporting on these people.we know gore, kennedys, hollywood etc.find out about the next people down.if i could prove it they are people who live off the fat of the land or public servants who couldnt work in the private sector or people who have had every thing handed to them like valley girl mccain, like a ya know, like a ya know progressive.or liberal, same difference.who are the nameless no background people?
Worked in the gas industry for 33 years. The policies of most natural gas companies are to exceed the rules and regulations established by the PSC and DOT. The rules are already in place concerning marking pipelines. Most states (West Virginia) also participate in a one call system, that requires pipelines to be marked timely when requested by anyone, not just coal companies. It was always policy to hold the water from drilling areas. Kind of makes me wonder why our elected officals would even bother proposing a bill, when it is already regulated. As for environmentalist, in some cases they have certainly slowed down progress and delayed construction of major projects, which would have little impact on the environment.
